Staying 2 weeks in Des Plains

I will be in Des Plains for work for two weeks from 8/12-8/24. Can anybody tell me what there is to do in the evenings there? Are there any good restaurants?

Paradise Pup. Eat at Paradise pup. You're going to think I'm nuts when you pull up. Tiny place, little parking...the only hint will be the long line of folks queued up for food. This place has the BEST cheddar-burgers anywhere! The fries are great...be sure to have your onions off the grill. It's a spot only the locals know about....but that's all they need because folks come back again and again. I try to limit my visits...the doubles are incredible and I don't care to begin to take the shape of a pear!

oh, if you prefer more formal try the Rosewood, that won't be far from your hotel. Check their write ups here; If you want to have a great steak in Chicago hit Gene and Georgetti. It's a VERY old school Chicago place. Odds are the Italian guys sitting a few tables away from you are associated with exactly who you might think they're associated with. Really, both of these places have a more sophisticated old school Chicago feel to them. Have a great stay.

not far from DP is downtown park ridge. the epicenter is touhy and northwest highway... there are a number of restaurants and very walkable... also, it is home to the historic pickwick theatre, an art-deco movie house...

i

other downtowns, areas and stuff worth checking out 20-30 minutes driving (traffic permitting) of downtown DP in no particular order:

most of these links take you to the northshore, pretty much the most desirable suburban area in chicagoland..... most of the towns from evanston on the south, to lake forest on the north end have vibrant, historic downtowns... the ones that stand out are evanston, highwood and highland park, and to a lesser extent, lake forest, wilmette, glencoe and winnetka...

if you can find the time, there are several nature preserves relatively close by:

fpdcc.com/nature-centers/…

www.lcfpd.org/preserves/index.cfm…

chicagoriverpaddle.com/rent/lagoons-winnetka

if you venture east to the Northshore, take a picnic to the beach... see the beach sticky on the upper right corner of this page.... my recommendation for a nice evening by the lake would be lighthouse beach and/or the northwestern campus in evanston.... also, gillson beach/park in wilmette....

not sure how much time you'll have in the evenings, but a drive up along sheridan road is a very nice way to kill a coupla hours....

gozamos.com/2010/…

last, but not least, the best pizza in chicago can be eaten here:

the morton grove location (the original, and the better of the two) is just about 15 minutes east of downtown DP....

know you don't wanna drive too much, but if you want to make the most of your free time, you need to get out of des plaines!!

Based on your age, I'm assuming you'd prefer areas where you can get a cocktail. Skip downtown Park Ridge. There are very few restaurants. Park Ridge has strict liquor laws. Edison Park is just down the street and is a much better choice.

Yeah, I do enjoy a good cocktail and I'm from a city that is known for cocktails. I have been to Gene and Georgetti, I liked the atmosphere, but again, I'm from a city that is known for steaks as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Sounds like you'd appreciate the Rosewood in Rosemont.
