Hotel advice for first time visit

My husband and I are going to Chicago for the first time in May, 2014. The following hotels are in our budget. We'd like to be downtown, within walking distance to restaurants (major foodies) and shops. What would you recommend?

Conrad

Talbott

Millenium Knockerbocker

Thompson Chicago

Hampton Inn and Suites

Sofitel

Hotel Monaco

Do you mind me asking your age range? I only ask because if you are more in the mood for going out at night in party-central, I would pick the Thompson. If you prefer relaxation and privacy, I would chose The Conrad. The Sofitel has a great location for the party life, but I didn't like the small rooms. By the way, the hotels you chose are all very nice.

We are 46 so aren't into the party scene anymore. But we do like good restaurants and relaxation. It sounds like the Conrad might be a good option then? Thanks for all the great tips everyone!
