Taste of Chicago 2005: Basic Tips, Information and...

Given that many people will be coming into the city for/during the Taste of Chicago festival, I thought it would be good to discuss some basic tips/details. I would also appreciate if other locals would contribute their thoughts/tips:

* There are no admission costs for the Taste - entrance is free.

* Do not attempt to drive to the Taste if you have a car. Public transit is a must.

* Food and beverages are bought by exchanging tickets. Tickets are sold in strips of 11 for $7. Drinks, entrees and taste portions all cost varying amounts of tickets at each restaurant booth. Tickets can be purchased at stands that are at the different ends of the Taste. Credit cards are accepted to purchase tickets at the booths in the Taste during the festival. Tickets can also be purchased before the Taste (June 16-23) at local Dominicks grocery stores for $5.50 (limit 4). Tickets can also be purchased in advance online (includes a $3.50 shipping fee per order) at:

https:/…

- Ticket sales end at 8:30pm, but the fest stays open shortly after.

* If you are going to be in the city for an extended period, you may want to take a small notepad to the Taste in order to write down the details of restaurants you want to go to to try later on.

* The CTA often has booths up selling passes and transit cards, if you need them while in Chicago.

* If you are in a pack of people, it's a good idea to set a place to meet if you get separated. Ideas include the Buckingham Fountain or the back entrance of the Art Institute on Columbus Dr.

* Go expecting that it WILL be busy/crowded. During the busiest times, it almost becomes a bit difficult to move around the general booth areas. The general lunch hour is sometimes quite busy, because workers from the downtown area often head to the Taste.

Iowa, glad you're staying in my neck of the woods! I think you'll really enjoy the area!

The fastest way down to the Taste: take the Red Line from the Addison stop (just beside Wrigley Field - 4 blocks to the northwest of your hotel--go N to Addison--hang a left - you can't miss it) down to the Washington stop (if you want to walk through Millennium Park first) or the Monroe stop. Then just walk east 3 blocks to Michigan Avenue--the area of Grant Park you want is southeast of Millennium Park about 3 blocks.

The most scenic way: walk east on Hawthorne 1 (long) block to Lake Shore Drive (this is a lovely street with big, beautiful houses--it's a historical area) and pick up either the #145 SB or #146 SB bus at the SW corner of the intersection. The #145 is the best because it travels south all the way down Michigan Avenue after Lake Shore Drive--the stop you want to get off is at the Art Institute--then just go over the bridge east - the Taste is right there. The #146 SB goes south on Michigan Avenue then turns west on Wacker and then south on State Street. The reason why I mention both is in case there is some delay in one arriving. Do NOT take the #151 - it's a local and will take a LONG time to get you where you need to be.

Getting back--you can pick up the Red Line, the #145 or #146 all on State Street.

Have fun!

P.S. Iowa, forgot to mention: I don't know what time you were referring to on Monday night. If around rush hour, I'd recommend the Red Line. The reverse commute can be pretty slow, especially where it backs up at the north end of Michigan Avenue and Michigan Avenue.

If you are going by bus, the best time would be to leave 3:30 pm-4:00 pm - certainly no later than 4:15 pm. Or after 7:00 pm. Hope this helps.

8. Re: Taste of Chicago 2005: Basic Tips, Information and...

Thanks so much for the priceless info! I'm coming from Kansas City and will be attending the "Taste" on Friday and checking out Larryn Hill. Two questions...I am staying in Bannockburn and have rented a car but you said people shouldn't drive to the event; is there a good place between Bannockburn and downtown that I can leave the car and catch public transportation? Also, I'm attending another show at the Navy Pier on Thursday. Is this in the same area as the "Taste"? Will I run into similiar parking problems? Any/all info you can provide will be appreciated. Thank you.

9. Re: Taste of Chicago 2005: Basic Tips, Information and...

The easiest option is probably to take the commuter train, the closest train station to Bannockburn is Deerfield, you can check out the train information at www.metrarail.com. Union Station where the train comes in is on the opposite side of town from Grant Park where the taste is held, maybe a 20 minute walk? There are free trolleys operating from there to the other side of town and to Navy Pier or I'm sure there are bus/el options to get you over there.

If the train schedules don't work for you, you might be able to park and ride at one of the CTA (el) stations but you'd have to at least get to Evanston, the next suburb north of Chicago, for that. Maybe someone else can help you pick an El station that would be convenient and safe if you are returning home late.

10. Re: Taste of Chicago 2005: Basic Tips, Information and...

I think it makes more sense to drive to the Deerfield METRA station and take the train into the city than drive, unless you're going to be stopping somewhere else before or after your visit to the Taste (or your other venue at Navy Pier).

Union Station isn't on the "other side" of the city (from Grant Park), it's in the Downtown area. The "126 Jackson" bus stops at the south side of Union Station and will let you off right at Grant Park and very close to the main entry point for the Taste. As indicated in earlier comments, you can also make the journey on foot - it'll be about 20 minutes east of the train station as mentioned.

As for your trip to Navy Pier, you can take a METRA train to Union Station and catch a bus ("124 - Navy Pier") operated by the CTA that runs from the train station to Navy Pier, and there are the free trolly's, also. I recommend the CTA bus ($1.75 - no change given, so have exact or a couple of $1 bills handy).
