Saturday Breakfast?

Staying in Bloomington en route to football at U of I. The game's at noon so a hearty breakfast will be in order. Any recommendations?

Starting off with non-chain places, many locals like CJ's at the airport. It is not at the main terminal -- it is at the private aviation complex which is reached via a separate exit off Empire Street (Illinois Route 9) about a quarter mile closer to the city than the two roads to the main terminal. There is a bank building at the corner, but take the road in to the large parking lot and the restaurant is in the left side of the large, squat building between the hangers.

Another local choice is Shannon's Five Star Restaurant (so named because it's on the site of an old truck stop named Five Star, not because of the number of Michelin stars awarded to it :) at the corner of Mercer and Veterans Parkway, which is the main commercial street on the east side of Bloomington. There is an Enterprise Rental Car office and a CVS Pharmacy at that corner.

The Garden of Paradise is on Empire Street across from the Mall, just west of K-Mart.

There are also many chain restaurants along Veterans Parkway -- Denny's is at Oakland at Veterans, and you will also find Chilli's, TGI Fridays, and Applebee's. There's an IHOP on Empire east of its intersection with Veterans Parkway, in front of the Lowe's store.

From any of these, you can take Illinois 9 or Ireland Grove Road east, to Towanda-Barnes Road south, to US 150 east, into the little town of Downs where you join I-74 east, a shortcut that will take you only 45-50 minutes to get to Champaign-Urbana (add in some extra for game-day traffic and getting into the lots) to go see the Illini lose. But, it's always a great time at Memorial Stadium.
