Spring Break in Weston

We will be spending spring break in Weston with our boys ages 12, 14 and 17. We are regular beach goers (Topsail Island, NC) and all are strong swimmers. We are more activity and good local food folks than pool relaxing and five star restaurants. Our goal is to really experience the everglades (as in so well we can check it off our list) and hopefully enjoy some excellent snorkeling as well (if the water is warm). Stick in some outstanding lunch spots and we will consider it a wonderfully successful trip. Please let us know the "not to miss" opportunities for the everglades as well as best suggestions for snorkeling (we have all been to St. Martin and experienced the waters there). Any unique side trip or excursion would also be helpful. Thanks!

I don't believe I've read of anyone snorkeling in the Everglades plus you run the risk of meeting alligators. The Keys is where all the good snorkeling will be found.

AhHah, thanks for the good info! Any thoughts on snorkeling on the Atlantic side?

I believe the nearest would be in Key Biscayne off Miami if you don't want to go to one of the Upper Keys like Islamorada. But better to ask in the Miami forum.

A good way to experience the Everglades if you don't want the noisy airboat ride is to do the Tram tour in Shark Valley which is located on Hwy 41 about 30 miles west of Miami. Google it for details.

From Weston, Shark Valley is easy to get to. The draw there is a 14 mile loop road that you can bike or tram. I suggest renting the bikes and exploring at your own pace. Take a picnic lunch as there aren't lots of food options in the area. Combine this with an airboat ride for the fun of that.

For snorkeling, a day trip to Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo would be the best option.

For an active beach day, check out the windurfing lessons on the way to Key Biscayne. You might want to "like" this organization on facebook. They post everyday on what the wind conditions are like. http://www.sailboardsmiami.com/

They also have stand up paddle boards and kayaks.

Lunch or dinner at Scottys in Coconut Grove would be a good add-on to the windsurfing.

There are some great hiking oportunities and Ranger led walks in the Everglades. Go to the national park service website for a list of when you are coming. Try to see the Annihinga Trail. Great wildlife viewing. There are several snorkling trips out of Ft. Lauderdale which are quite a bit closer than the Keys or Biscayne. Biscayne is another national park.
