Vero beach for a few days before disney :) beach restaurants

Hi :)

Any good lunch/dinner spots on the water that are really good? Have never been to Vero, we will be staying at the disney resort and will have a car. Thanks!

The Disney Resort is a good distance from town; in some respects, it's easier to go to Sebastian via Wabasso Expressway. The sub shop at Wabasso Beach (next door to the resort) is the latest branch of a long-lived local chain. It replaces the terminally eccentric Boppy's.

The Resort's restaurant has dropped off the Florida Trend Magazine list, but remains ambitious. During summers, they do advertise at one of the local movie theaters.

Riverside Café on the Indian River is popular, but be aware that it's somewhat more bar than restaurant.

Across the way on the mainland, Lobster Shanty has never had much of a reputation for food but does have a great view. Under the same ownership with less view is Mr. Manatees (on the same street, a short distance west), which definitely has good food, but hardly any view.

On the beach, Jaycee Park's Seaside Grill is good for breakfast or lunch (the orange juice is from a small Vero Beach producer) and icecream/sandwiches are available at adjoining shops in the boardwalk area to the south. In the beach "downtown" areas, there's a string of more or less beachfront restaurants from the Vero Beach Hotel and Spa (Cobalt) south to Ocean Grill (a very busy and very old restaurant),

the Cuban one in Costa d' Este hotel (Gloria Estefan's), and the ambitious Citrus Grillhouse in a new condo building at Humiston Park.

Next door is the much older and amazingly persistent Ninos Pizza.

There are lots of fairly-near-the-water eateries, too.

Thanks so much!

How far of a drive would you say the drive is into town?

It's on the order of 15 minutes, 2.5 traffic signals (one is a demand light for pedestrians).

There's a lot more restaurant listings on earlier discussions. On the mainland, the Miracle Mile shopping area (Publix and Fresh Market supermarkets) and the mainland "downtown" have lots of eateries. Downtown has become a restaurant cluster over the past decade.

There's not much choice in the matter. The barrier island north of Vero is strictly residential except for one small, upscale shopping center and the couple of businesses at the end of Wabasso Causeway.

For your entertainment, here's info on a garish house up for auction north of Disney, opposite decorous Windsor.

At Wabasso Beach, one of the lifeguards is a snorkeling enthusiast and keeps up on water clarity. If there is surf (a big if), the local bodyboarders and skimboarders put on a good show.

Hi LD. I just returned from DVB yesterday. For a light lunch on the water you can stay right on property and eat at The Green Cabin Room. They have an outdoor deck with great view of the ocean. For dinner i would suggest either Mulligans or The Ocean Grill in Vero. They are both on the beach (Ocean Grill is directly on the beach). About a 10 minute ride from the resort. straight down A1A

We've recently enjoyed a meal at Mulligans and loved the atmosphere and beautiful view of the water. You can choose to dine indoors or outdoors. Our food was very good. We saw the Ocean Grill directly across the road from Mulligans and plan to give them a try as well. You can spend an entire day browsing through all the gift shops in the area. I found the Dashing Dog store to be an exceptional place to shop for your best friends supplies.

Riverside Theater is playing a revue, "The World Goes Round" featuring Kander and Ebb songs, in its small black box auditorium through Feb. 18. Worth seeing for the choreography. Five performers, three musicians, lots and lots of costumes.

I have lived in Vero since 95 and do enjoy the beach side and mainland. As far as eateries go for beachside, coming straight south on AIA from Disney Resort, Mulligan's and Bobby's are good with the locals, Waldo's has excellant seating right on the waters edge (ocean) and is fun for lunch to people watch or dinner for live music, good for sandwhiches and salads only. Waldo's and Riverside get to be more of a bar scene in the evenings, as well as the Costa Hotel, and Vero Beach's Inn & Spa the Blue Indigo which has a nice bar area outside seating directly ocean front with an evening fire pit. Ocean Grill is very touristy, and I think better places to eat for the price you pay, nice for a special occassion. Riverside is riverside, the rest are beachside with ocean views, except Bobby's. Don't forget to stop and have some ice cream at Kilwins, across from Humiston Park about 4 blocks south of Mulligans on the west side of ocean dr, skip Cravings-too little low quality ice cream for the price. Driving back at night, just watch your speed up A1A, the cops are always around.
