Where to stay in St. Augustine and day trips.

We are looking for a four star hotel that is on the beach and within walking distance to the historic area. Is this possible in St. Augustine?

We will have a rental car and would like some day trips to quaint ocean towns or attractions for two adults who like to shop and see history.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Uh beach is 4 miles fromtown, so nothing there is walking distance to the historic area. Four star is Casa Monica and Hilton Historic in town. I think that's it.

Thanks for fast reply. Are there also 4 star on beach?

What about towns or attractions near by for day trips?

Thanks,

" Are there also 4 star on beach?"

Not in St. Augustine.

Closest might be the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club (AAA 5 diamonds) www.pontevedra.com/inn-and-club/index.aspx or the The Lodge and Club at Ponte Vedra Beach (AAA 4 diamonds) www.pontevedra.com/lodge-and-club/index.aspx

This would be closer. It is an all inclusive resort but it would still be 30 minutes from downtown. That said it has some great restaurants on property and its close to other great restaurants. Its in an area with fabulous beachscape views near a stretch where you have open views of the ocean from the road, something unusual for the east coast. About 5 or six miles south is the sleepy little beach community of Flagler Beach.

If you want an area that is more contemporary and modern, then Ponte Vedra would be the place to go.

About halfway between Hammock Beach and St. Augustine is Ft. Matanzas, one of the more significant historic sites in the area.
