Rugby on TV

Hi

We'll be staying the Wyndam Palm Aire from 9 November, Wales will be playing rugby against Argentina on the 10th, does anyone know a bar/hotel where we would be able to watch UK sport in the area?

Also, we'll be in Orlando on 24 November, does anyone know of any places to watch rugby in that area?

many thanks

Tony

We went to Seaside Grill inside the Lighthouse Cove Resort for Sunday brunch this week. We wanted to watch The Ryder Cup on one of the 5-6 TVs and they were more than happy to accommodate while many others were watching football. Hotels usually have good channel selections. Try calling ahead. Also, you may want to try Stingers. We've not been inside, but we noticed when we drove by it today the sign said sports bar. I wouldn't think you would have much trouble finding the place & station.

Many thanks for this, I'll give them a try, I bet you had a great time watching the Ryder cup in an American bar!! I hope they didn't take it too badly?!

Any other useful tips for a first timer to the area, we have acar at our disposal?

LlanelliToni - try the Briny Pub which is at Atlanic Blvd and Briny Avenue near the beach. It's an Irish pub. Also the Fox & Hound Pub is in Oakland Park. If you don't mind driving I bet the Blue Anchor Pub in Delray Beach (about 15 miles north) will show it. They opened at 5am to show the royal wedding.

What do you enjoy doing for fun and what are the ages of those traveling with you? That would help with suggestions.

Hi GK95

I don't think Wales playing rugby has quite the same worldwide appeal as the royal wedding! But I'll try the places you recommend, I'm sure we'll be lucky?

I'll be travelling with my wife, she's 68 and I'm 67 years young. Our ideal holiday would be going for a drive-swamps/small towns/beaches in the day, then out about 7pm for a "few pints" before a nice meal sampling the local dishes. We prefer to walk out to a pub/restaurant and not have to drive, though from what I've read this may not be possible because of the location of our apartment? Maybe public transport out and a taxi home?

Many thanks

PS How's the weather there now?

I don't know of any other place that opened for the royal wedding so you might get lucky : )

There's plenty to do in the Pompano/Ft. Lauderdale area. Unfortunately not where you're staying. It's about 6 miles from the beach and there isn't a lot to do around there. The hotel is nice though. There is a Winn-Dixie grocery store across the street on one side and a Super Wal-Mart across the street on the other side so you can fill your fridge with snacks and drinks and maybe make dinner or breakfast a few times.

The Isle Casino, which is across the street, is supposed to have a good restaurant so you might want to go over there one night. There's a Ruby Tuesday restaurant in the Winn-Dixie plaza but I'd suggest you grab a cab and go to the Chili's Restaurant which is south on Powerlne Road (their food and drink specials are better).

One night take a cab and grab a meal away from Palm Aire. Public transportation is pretty dismal around here and I'd suggest that you avoid it if you can. There are several places you could go:

Royal Pig Pub - it's a new place on Las Olas Blvd and supposed to be excellent: http://www.royalpigpub.com/

15th Street Fisheries - good food, great view. Be sure to sit outside downstairs (upstars has a different, more expensive menu): http://www.15streetfisheries.com/

Southport Raw Bar - a local tradition. Basic meals and beer on the water: http://www.southportrawbar.com/

Nauti Dog Cafe - closer to your hotel. Has gotten good reviews and is on the water on the Intercoastal: http:// www.nautidawg.com

The Chart House - if it's a special occassion this is a great place to go. They have a happy hour where some of the food is lesser price (if you don't mind sitting at the bar): http://www.chart-house.com/

Be sure to go to the beach in Pompano to relax. Also if you can, make it over to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. You could easily spend the day at the beach and then walk to one of the local restaurants for a bite before you head back.

Let us know if you have any more questions.

Oh I believe that you can rent a car at the Wyndham Palm Aire. You mght want to check into it for a day or two if you want to get out and see the Everglades or other places where it's not feesible to grab a taxi.

Good mention about Briny's. We really enjoyed our meals there. I don't remember many tv's there though. It's the only restaurant that we visited more than once during our vacation.

It gets to 87-92 probably and the ocean temp is 80-83... Very warm. It has been very rainy the past several weeks, but it rains mostly at night and clears up very quickly.
