If you have a car, go early and spend a day at Bush Gardens in Tampa, about 1.5 hours if you avoid prime traffic times. They have wonderful water rides and it's generally fun. Go east and you have Cape Canaveral, which offers a couple of tours, as well as Daytona Beach. There are a lot of cheesy attractions in the Orlando that are not worth the money. Some are. I loved Nobu at Cirque de Soliel, but it is pricey for a 2 hour show. Cypress Gardens has reopened and is now more of an amusement park than before, but I've not been. It too is not that far from Orlando. Check it out on the web.

If you take Earlybrass's suggestion of Bush Gardens in Tampa, you might as well spend a couple of days in that area. Look at www.tampabaybeaches.com for more info. on this area. There are many beautiful, family-friendly beach towns from Clearwater to the North down to St. Petersburg Beach at the South end. It would be a shame to go all the way to Florida and not get in some beach time.

Definatly check out the beach towns. My family would always spend a day or two at Daytona Beach on the way to Orlando and it was always a lot of fun. You may also want to go to the Kennedy Space Center, which has a lot of history and interesting things to do.

Buschgardens is realy only 45 mins away form Orlando, so its a good bed to try there. Daytona Beach and St Pete Beaches are very nice, St Pete is on the Gulf Coast, meaning warmer shallow watters, while Daytona is on the Atlantic, Colder Darker Waters. If its beaches your looking for you might concider a 3hr drive to the southwest to Captiva Beach its adjacent to Saniable (world renound for shelling) Its also close to Ft Myers where the Edison and Ford Winter Estates are.
