The most economical would be:

(1) take taxi to airport ($24 +tip flat rate)

(2) Store or check in luggage.

(3) take airport flyer express bus to south beach ($2.65 per person, takes 60 to 70 minutes incl wait times)

(4) Spend time in south beach, use 25c local bus if needed.

(5) take airport flyer bus back to airport. Allow a cushion for travel and check in delays, MIA can be a slow airport.

On Thursday the 31th of July we've a layover from 11pm till 4 pm. We'll be coming on an international flight and transfering to another international flight. We've never been in America and would like to spent some time on American ground instead of in the airport. We would like to see South Beach, but may be the time for that is to limited? But if we do it: would you suggest the bus or a taxi, may be with traffic jams etc.? Or, if South Beach is too far, do you have a good alternative, so we can experience a little bit of America while we're there?

Do you mean 11 PM to 4 PM (overnight), or do you mean 11 AM to 4 PM (5 hours)? If the latter, and it's the total time between flights, then there isn't enough time, it's better to stay at the airport. If the former, where will you be staying at night?

I tried using the Airport Flyer this morning based on rave reviews....waited over 40 minutes outside concourse E (as directed by trip advisor reviews) and no bus came. There were no signs or information anywhere about the bus schedule, total waist of time! Take a cab....

It's pretty simple. You have to take the MIA Mover which takes you to Airport transport station and then you take the bus. I did it when I visited Miami a few months ago. It was easy. There are clearly marked signs at the bus station and if you can't find it there are plenty of people to ask at the airport.

Sorry you had this confusion. The airport bus used to leave from Concourse E, about 3 years ago! All the recent posts correctly describe taking the MIA mover to the RCC to catch the bus or metrorail. See this quote from AG's post at the top:

"When you arrive, look for the PINK SIGNS to take you to the free MOVER which whisks you to the RCC/ Transit center."

Hi,

I'm staying at a hostel at 1676, James Avenue, South Beach and will need to get to the airport for an 11.20am flight to San Francisco this Sunday 24th August, but am advised by my airline to get there 2 hrs early, by 9.20am. Could you please advise the closest stop to catch the airport flyer and time (maybe the latest that would work and the one before that as well, to be there by 9.20am?

Thanks heaps!

PS I tried asking my hostel for some public transport information and she knew nothing at all, just told me to look it up on the internet!!!

The stop at 17 and Collins will be just a short block east from your hotel. Take the northbound #150 bus to the airport. Be sure to look for the bus and wave to it.

On a Sunday the bus should be near your stop at 8:30 AM. It gets to the airport 9 AM, but it can take 15 to 20 mins to go from the airport bus station to the terminals via the free light rail (MIA Mover). The bus is every half hour so the earlier bus would be 8:00 AM, and the later one about 9:00 AM.

Thankyou, this is such a car-based town and it's amazing how many people here know nothing about public transport (it wasn't just the hostel person, even some bus drivers right there couldn't tell me anything!!!) ... truly appreciate your great assistance!

You're welcome. The airport bus is relatively new (about four years) but a great boon for tourists and locals alike. Please note the fare is now $2.65 per person, not the $2.35 in the title of this thread. They accept cash, but don't give change. There is adequate room for luggage, but you have to lift it on and off the bus yourself.

Happy travels!
