Carib. cpl. seeking some local input!!

Recent transfer from Sav. to Orlando has me planning our first trip to Gulf Coast for hubby's 40th. Lived in Bahamas & USVI for years, appreciate quiet beach, and great sunsets. Although Canadian, he can be on the beach all day(Former dive instr.) but I love a nice pool with a private/tropical feel for am coffee, pm wine and shade!! Will be driving but hoping to find a place with character and charm- (1 fine dine for Bday, otherwise casual) that we can walk to. 3 nights , May 12th, around$150-$200/night.

Have looked tirelessly online for right place (special occasion) but looking for right mix of great beach and quaint town feel. Is Longboat a good call? Thanks so much in advance for any help!!

Nice quiet beach, some shade when wanted, great sunsets, tropical feel, a good restaurant plus some casual places -- Longboat would absolutely work for that; take a look at Little Gull Cottages. Quaint town or your choice of places in walking distance -- nope, that's not Longboat. Though from Longboat it is a short drive to St. Armand's Circle where there are 120+ upscale shops and restaurants.

For the "old Florida" quaint town feel you should look at Anna Maria Island (check out their forum), and maybe consider staying at Harrington House. Otherwise I think I'd head for Boca Grande or maybe Captiva, though that would make for a longer drive for you.

For a small town feel with restaurants in walking distance to your lodging, you should definitely consider

Anna Maria Island.

There aren't any high rises, no chain restaurnats and a quaint downtown..there is also a free trolley.

You should post on that forum

As mentioned Anna Maria Island is quaint and has a trolley to get around.

Not sure about the $150/night for lodging on Longboat.

The Beach, a small condo place on Longboat (www.thebeachonlbk.com) is $170 at that time. Right on the beach; pool will have sun all day, though.
