I am coming to LBTS with my 13 yr old daughter. We have never been snorkeling. Where is the best place to go? Can you snorkel from the beach? Should we buy gear ahead of time (we will be in Puerto Rico in the summer for more snorkeling!) - any recommendations?

If you're both comfortable swimmers in deeper waters, you can go snorkeling from the beach in LBTS. We snorkeled here last summer, entering the water from either side of the pier at the end of Commercial Blvd. and swimming (with the help of fins) out to the end of the pier which is surrounded by a coral reef and some of the sea life that goes along with that. We rented snorkeling gear from a diving shop (the only one in town I think) a block away from the beach and pier. This shop also arranges snorkeling outings that takes you out deeper by boat.

If you have transportation, our 15, 13 and 7 year olds all enjoyed snorkeling about 20 min north at Red Reef Park in Boca Raton ($16/car, see reviews). There are several small rocky areas in just a few feet of water depending on the tides. We saw our first barracuda and stingray there. We used basic masks and snorkels from Target and had no problems. No need for fins here. The deeper snorkeling from the beach at LBTS was more than our kids were comfortable with.

Wondering how your trips went and how you and the kids liked snorkeling at LBTS and Red Reef?

Would love some feedback..
