The Keys in Feb

We're returning to The Keys for the 1st time in nearly 11 years, this time with a 9yr old son in tow.

Am concerned re what the weather will be like/things to do with son.

In 1994, during our honeymoon, we only managed a couple of days on Marathon before we had to flee north through Tropical Storm Gordon to avoid being stranded.

This time we're spending 5 days on Marathon @ The Holiday Inn, as part of a 2-week fly-drive.

Have read bad reviews re the hotel, plus bad reviews of Key West for visiting with kids, particularly cos we'll be around over Presidents' Day weekend.

We're also booked to go for a dolphin swim @ Theater of the Sea on Islamorada - what's the sea temperature like? Should we hire wetsuits or could we cope with swimming cossies?

Would welcome feedback re weather/our hotel/our dolphin swim/any other things to do in Feb on The Keys.

We spent 4 days in Marathon last Feb. Went out on the reef to snorkle and the water temp was 74. We had shortie 3mm suits on and got chilled after 2 hours in the water. My wife also got into a Port. Man-o-War which wasn't too bad but scared her. This year we will use full length wet suits for both reasons. Went out with Tildens and they did a great job. Weather was 80-85 days, 70 at night-no bugs and no rain. We just rented a Condo for the week of Feb 5-12 on the Gulf side for about same as a motel room. We like Marathon due to its central location and laid back attitude. Don't know about the children aspect but if he likes water, should do alright. Try Dave at Marathon Key Rentals if you want to try something different. 305-743-9088.

If you can get out of the holiday inn, do so. The Keys have so many neat little places. Talk to the Marathon Chamber of commerce or if you are flying into Marathon, talk to the Jet Center for recomendations. It was cold in the keys last week, but it is warming up. No telling what it will be like for swimming.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Bluewater - why "get out of the Holiday Inn" - is it really THAT bad?

Booked last October & they've already charged my credit card for the room, altho' there is a cancellation clause, if we do it quick....(coming in 2&1/2 weeks), plus other accomodations are in short supply cos it's Presidents' Day weekend. Tried booking in several other places @ the time, but they were either already fully booked, too expensive or wanted a minimum 7-nite stay.

We're not that fussy where we lay our heads - are well used to Florida average-standard motel rooms, as long as they're clean (plus we're on quite a tight budget). If we were coming to The Keys for longer would have looked for somewhere a bit different/more up-market.

Any more feedback much appreciated, also where to hire wetsuits on Marathon as think this might now be a necessity?

We have been going to the Keys for 14 years. The Holiday Inn is not the greatest but you could have picked alot worse.

There is a great Restaurant across the street called The Island, they also have snorkle and sunset trips. The water is pretty chilly this time of year.

The Stuffed Pig is the best place to get Breakfast in Marathon, the place looks old but the food is good and it's cheap.

At the end of 15th street is Burdines Marina. They have a open air restaurant on top of the Marina, it's great for sunsets and you can see the boats come and go. Best Mahi Mahi sandwich in the Keys.

Key West is fun for all. Mel Fishers Museum, Lighthouse, Coch Tour Train,Harbor Distict, and the sunset celabration at the end of Duval street are a few must see things. ( The other End of Duval has some Gay bars etc. fyi)

Just north of Marathon is the Dolphin Reserch Center and they also offer Swimming with the Dolphins. Our family likes it better than Theater of the Sea.

On you way to Theater of the sea stop by Robbies and feed the Tarpons it's only a couple bucks and bring your camera.

If the wind is low go fishing, you will have a blast. Sea Dog Charters is very reasonable. It's just before you get to the 7 mile bridge in the bay side (right). Tell them FOOTLESS sent you (my brother lived in marathon 15 years and supplied Sea Dog with bait and Chum).

They filmed the movie True Lies on the 7 mile bridge and piegon. You can take a tour of piegon key left hand side just before the 7 mile bridge.

You will have fun, bring alot of $$$
