Will the water be too chilly to get into in the middle of march?

There is no absolute answer to this. Chillier than it is right now, yes. Whether it is too chilly to go in is subject to debate. Many local residents -- who are used to the bathwater-like temperatures that we have now -- wouldn't go in the water in March. Many people would disagree.

For years, my family would come down for spring break, usually in March, and we eagerly joined the other tourists in the water. In general, you will find many people who don't think it's too chilly; specifically, it also depends on the particular weather conditions that day -- if a cold front is moving through, it's cloudy, and there is a strong breeze, then fewer people will be going in (but there will always be some).

Your band students will probably want to go in, even if the water is slightly chilly. It would take extreme conditions to discourage them, and the odds are with you that it will be acceptable weather. Even if it is too cold to go in, a sunny day will enable sunbathing.

Statistically, the average water temperature in mid-March should be around 68 degrees, and the typical ambient high about 76-78 degrees. In 2011 and 2012, the winters were warmer, and these temperatures were higher. However, there can be no guarantees about the weather.
