Why is the week June 9-16, 2012 booked so much for condos?

Just curious if something is going on that week. It seems like most of the condos I look at are blocked out that week. I've checked the Cocoa Beach events calendar, but nothing is up. Do any of you know if something major is going on at that time? Maybe it's just a popular week.

thanks for the info- we chose Cocoa partially because forums like these seemed to make it sound like a good alternative for a family vacation- the less hectic experience sounds good, just hope are not disappointed if we get there and area has an old and rundown look & feel (please no offense, havent been there and just wanted to ask if anyone has that perception)- any input would be apprecaited, looking forward to our trip

It will be different than Ocean City, but probably in a good way if you just want to relax and spend time with the family. Cocoa Beach is a mixture of laid-back, slightly-worn "charming old Florida" and glitzy new. Around Ron Jon, the Cocoa Beach Surf Company, and the Sheraton, the buildings are new and a little "over the top" in wild colors and style. Many of the bigger hotels are modern, but there are a number of smaller, older ones dating back to the 1960's -- the reviews will show you which are which. Overall, the area is middle to upper-middle hotels; there are really no deluxe resorts here like Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Fairmont, etc.

I'm not quite sure how to describe Cocoa Beach so that you will know what to expect and what not to expect. Personally, we are no strangers to very nice hotels in major cities like London, Tokyo, Moscow, etc., and even the almost preposterous Burj al Arab in Dubai, but have kept coming back to Cocoa Beach to just relax, and now have brought a vacation condo here, where we now sit. Somehow, the pace is just right even though it doesn't have the near the glamour of those other cities. If you want busy and expensive, Cocoa Beach is not for you.

But, it really is a nice area for a family to just relax and focus on outdoor activities like the beach, pools, water sports, nature, etc. The traffic is mostly on one road, A1A, that stretches for miles with low-density development, which means that there is plenty of room for ample parking lots, most of which are free, so driving to restaurants or shops is much easier than in high-density resort areas where there is difficult and costly parking. The traffic is really manageable, and moves quite well with only rare back-ups.

There is no boardwalk, nor are there the accompanying rows of densely-packed arcades, souvenir shops, etc. There are numerous touristy shops selling the usual beach towels, shot glasses, etc., but not much in the way of upscale apparel shops or art studios outside of a few scattered ones. If you want really upscale and a broad selection, there are nice shopping centers within a 30-60 minute drive, which takes in parts of Orlando. Usually, we decide the night before if the next day will be a beach day, a pool day, local shopping at Viera or Cocoa Village, Orlando shopping, or one of the theme parks over in Orlando. There is Merritt Square Mall with Macy's, Dillard's, Sears, Penny's and some smaller stores just 5-10 minutes away, but it is just the typical regional mall and not as nice as Florida Mall and the Mall at Millenia about 50-60 minutes away. Mostly, we just stay around Cocoa Beach and chill out, but it's nice to know we are so close to world-class attractions and shopping for the occasional desire or a bad beach weather day.

There are numerous restaurants, probably 200 within 10-15 minutes. Over the past several days, we've had Thai, Japanese, Italian, and Mexican. Most are very casual and reasonably-priced, but there are a few nice, "night-out" places. We like the Mango Tree, Silvestro's, Cafe Margaux, Heidelburg Restaurant and Jazz Club, Fat Snook, and several others that we always return to. Italian Courtyard is great for families, and there are casual restaurants on the pier and up at the port.

Take a look at street-view on Google Maps to see what it's like, and read the posts on the Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral forums to get ideas of the types of activities available. Have a great trip!
