brief trip report for those interested in cedar key

if you are looking for nature, fishing, hiking ,kayaking and biking this is the place....want action go elsewhere....it is hard to find old florida and the" city " of cedar key is a last vestige of the era. folks from the cold places are very active in the community and want it to remain as is. clam farming is a big deal here...tourism second...lots of adorable old florida homes, birders are happy here as well. fisherman love it but so far the only catches have been by ospreys that we have seen from our balcony.

it is about 1 hr drive from gainesville and if staying for any length of time go to publix and get your food.....rt 24 and tower rd...........small market here.

dont expect fine dining either..island hotel the best...make sure to ask for both the bar and hotel menu.....bar is much cheaper.....the rest is fried food and good clams.

so if you are looking for a by gone era check out cedar key.

Glad you had a good time in Cedar Key! It's definitely Old Florida and "Florida without the mouse" - no chains, no nonsense. We particularly love birding and fishing in Cedar Key. The fishing is quite good depending on time of the year, weather, and which captain takes you out. You can almost always catch speckled trout, but my favorite is redfish.

The Market in Cedar Key is small, but offers a pretty good selection of Boars Head brand meats and cheeses, wines, beers, and some local treats. There's also fish markets in town and Chiefland (30 miles) has a Winn Dixie and a Super Walmart for more choices. There's a small fresh market on island - usually open Thurs-Sun for veggies and fresh flowers along with interesting jams and jellies.

On dining - Cedar Key actually has a pretty good selection of restaurants - down on Dock Street, our favorites are Steamers (excellent beer, clams, a low country boil and my FAVORITE clam chowder on island! The Big Deck Raw Bar and Grill has the best grouper sandwich. Ever. The Cubans are really good too. Music most weekends, sometimes Sundays too. A pretty laidback atmosphere and they are dog friendly - a rarity in restaurants....

We've been going to Cedar Key since 1997 and still love it - even after all these years. :)
