Delaware Park Casino and Racing

I am planning a trip to the casino and to watch the races on Sept 28th week. Where is the best place to stay, and do they have a shuttle or do you have to take a cab to the racetrack? What else is there to do nearby? I like antiquing, interesting shops, river boat cruises, interesting eateries, carriage rides, historical, etc.

Thanks

Christiana Hilton is just down the road from one of Del Parks entrances. Not sure about shuttle service. Cabs may be iffy. There are a several other properties in that same area from Red Roof Inn to Marriott variations.

As for eateries.....consider Main St in Newark which is just down the road. There are several chains jrestaurants across from the hotel.

Not sure where you are from. If you are interested in antiques then Winterthur Museum should be a stop. Longwood Gardens is a short drive away.

You won't have a car? How do you plan to get to the hotel? Delaware Park is in an area where a car is really a must.

There's a very nice track restaurant where you can watch the races from your table. Bets can be placed inside the restaurant; you don't have to go to the betting windows. Not sure what happens if you actually win -- that's never happened for me.

Newark is a nice little college town. The U. of Delaware has some nice museums of its own: http://www.udel.edu/museums/

Check www.thebrandywine.com/ and www.brandywinevalley.com/ for info on area attractions (30 minutes north). The New York Times just published an excellent overview of places to go/see/eat: …nytimes.com/2013/…

Delaware Tourism Office What's this?

A car will come in very handy to you as the steady availability of cab service is limited. Rent a car - you'll be happy you did!

The Hilton Wilmington/Christiana is very close to Delaware Park - great breakfast buffet, cozy bar inside and a great dining establishment onsite. Two others to consider are the Courtyard Wilmington/Newark Christiana Mall and Country Inn & Suites.

If you're into history - Historic New Castle should definitely be a stop on your travel itinerary. It's about 12 minutes or so from the Delaware Park area and it's LOADED with historical walking tours, cemetery tours, historical interpretations, garden tours and historic mansions etc. A must-see is the New Castle Court House Museum. If you're into history - this is the stop for you!! This is Delaware's first court and first capital (current capital is Dover). A visit here will give you insight into how New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Counties declared their independence from Pennsylvania and Great Britain, creating the Delaware State.

Also, the Wilmington/Brandywine Valley region is the birthplace of the DuPont company. You should definitely consider touring some or all of the DuPont family mansions. Must see's - Winterthur, Hagley Museum and Library, Nemours Mansion and Mt. Cuba Center.

What's your price range for dining establishments?
