nice place to stay/dine near Longwood Gardens or Winterthur?

We live on the eastern shore of MD and try to make a trip to those gardens at least every couple of years. We always find that we're rushing because we go and come same day. This time we're thinking of maybe staying overnight if there's someplace peasant (quiet) with a good restaurant nearby.

Thanks for suggestions.

The Mendenhall Inn is a wonderful restaurant and also has overnight lodging. We stayed there for a weekend there quite a few ago and it was really nice.

Mendenhall is a nice hotel and the restaurant is entirely adequate. If you are "foodies," there are much better choices within a 20-minute drive; happy to advise. But "a good restaurant" is just too vague -- if you can be more specific about what you want that would be great.

There's actually a fine dining restaurant at Longwood -- 1906. It isn't open for dinner now that the summer season is over, but you can have a lovely lunch there. There's also a decent cafeteria.

There are also many other good choices for lodging, both less and considerably more expensive than Mendenhaall Inn. Hard to beat Mendenhall's convenience, but there are a couple chains even closer to Longwood.

Thanks so much to both.

If we were to do a chain hotel, which might be best choice (quiet, newish, pleasantly situated)?

Restaurants: Like every kind of cuisine when it's prepared and served well. Don't need ultra-luxury; do care about excellent food. And not overly noisy.

Hilton Garden Inn or Fairfield Inn (Marriott), both in Kennett Square, are good choices for a chain hotel.

The Inn at Montchanin is fantastic. Check out the reviews on TripAdvisor as well as their website: http://www.montchanin.com/

I second the vote for Montchanin. If you can afford it.
