Columbus Day weekend (Oct 7-10)-- what's it like?

Hello! We are thinking about an off-peak trip to Rehobeth (never been before). We're a family of 3, with a 2 year old. What's it like in early October? How's the weather, how's the water, are lots of places already closed?

Also, we're considering a great rental in the Bay Vista area, which I understand is not in walking distance to the beach, shops, etc. With a small kid, we were really hoping to find a small house where we could walk to these places. Having never been to this area, I don't even know if it's possible! We don't want to stay in a condo.

Finally, I'm using HomeAway to scout out places. Any other websites to recommend?

Thanks.

It's RehobOth. Early October can be fantastic; or it could be chilly and rainy. Just like the fall in DC. You're basically in the same weather zone.

Rehoboth is pretty much a year-round destination now. But some kid-friendly attractions, like FunLand, will be closed.

Bay Vista is definitely NOT walking distance to the ocean, or downtown Rehoboth, or anything else remotely resembling a beach vacation. You'll have to get in the car for everything.

So decide: walking distance to the ocean, or driving distance. If you choose driving distance, the possibilities in October are practically endless. There are many hundreds of houses for rent within 5 miles of the Rehoboth Boardwalk. Use VRBO, HomeAway, local realtors.

The advantage of realtors is they can guide you when you're not familiar with the area, as seems to be your situation. We like Crowley; there are a dozen or more others who are reputable and competent.

One more thought -- with a toddler, you might be happier in Lewes, DE. It's on the bay, the water will be warmer, and the waves are practically non-existent. If you want the ocean, hop in the car and visit Cape Henlopen State Park for a small daily fee. Lewes Beach has houses within a block or so from the bay beach. Downtown Lewes is adorable; walking from Lewes Beach to 2nd St., heart of the town, is daunting for many, could be a breeze for you if you like walking.

Bay Vista is an easy bike ride into town if you do that sort of thing. It's only a mile or two to town. There are lots of houses to rent downtown, and I think you may be better off going through a realtor (such as Long & Foster).

The weather will be a little unpredictable and Funland will be closed, but other than that, you are sure to have a great trip.

Rehoboth Beach & Dewey Beach are very busy Columbus Day weekend as it is The Annual Greyhounds Reach The Beach event... A great weekend to be there...No traffic issues, No parking issues, No wait for a restaurant/table!.....Most all stores/shops and restaurants are open to accomodate all the people & hounds! The weather can be anything from cool/cold to absolutely delightful, warm beach weather, we just have to monitor the weather forecasts!...You can also try Vacation Rentals by owner for a rental.

Delaware Tourism Office What's this?

October is my favorite time of year in Rehoboth! The weather is usually in the mid 70s to high 60s during the day and 50s in the evening. It's the best!

Bay Vista is a great place to rent - it's only about 1.5 - 2 miles from downtown but you'll need to drive as you will have to cross the highway. There are no parking fees in October so parking will not be an issue. You'll find that all of the stores and restaurants will be open and offering specials (as most do during the off season).

You may want to research house rentals in downtown Rehoboth (but if you can't find something that suits your price range - I'd stick with Bay Vista). The benefit of not being RIGHT downtown is that you'll probably be more apt to explore the surrounding areas. You should definitely check out Lewes, DE, Bethany Beach, DE, and Cape Henlopen State Park. You may want to consider renting bikes for the weekend - you can actually bike from RB to Lewes via a trail (6miles). Its a great fall trip! Enjoy!

Try the Bellmoor if you have the extra $ to do so.

If on a budget or if you really need to economize, I would shop the four or five boardwalk hotels that Rehoboth has and go by the ratings...there are a variety of price points and the fall promotions would be very reasonable.

For the kids' sake, call the hotel you choose and see what attractions are open. Most of the boardwalk stores may be closed...ask about miniature golf, etc.

Being there in October -- when the temperatures are lower -- can be a REAL plus. I have been going for 45 years now and I can tell you the summers are just overwhelming these days -- hot, crowded, noisy.

As Mentioned above, Columbus Day weekend most everything is open on the weekend, including the arcades on the boardwalk for the kids. Rest assured, there will be plenty to do! It is also the annual Greyhounds reach the Beach weekend, so the kids will have plenty of dogs to pet (always ask first!) See You There!

The weather has been unseasonably warm for Oct...last two days were near perfect beach days. But unfortunately, that's due to change...Sunday 's HIGH's are forecast to only be in the 50's. That's October for you!
