Telluride, Aspen, or Beaver Creek? |
|
I am planning a ski road trip around the state, but can't make it to all the resorts. Between Aspen, Telluride, and Beaver Creek which one is a "must see/ski" and why? I have been to Deer Valley, UT...how do these compare? |
|
I admit to being a little bias, but I would have to say Aspen because you have 3 very different mountains all within 5 miles of each other. Each one has a different atmosphere and terrain. The scenery is great, weather is wonderful here, it doesn't seem to get as cold as some spots in the state or as windy. You have the night life of Aspen or Snowmass as well as the option to take a day off and go soak in the Hot Springs Pool in Glenwood Springs. With that said, I also love Telluride and honestly think it is even more scenic than Aspen, but you only get one mountain.

Wow, that is a tough one! those are all beautiful towns with world class skiing!

Beaver Creek. You're centrally located and can try out Vail (the absolute BEST in my opinioin), Copper, Breck, and even Aspen if you're ambitious enough, from there. And we just love Beaver Creek. But go to Telluride for the awesome beauty and chill town.

What did you like and dislike about Deer Valley? Probably worth mentioning since you're familiar with that resort is that all of these that you're considering allow snowboarding whereas DV doesn't. Additionally, DV does a great deal more grooming than pretty much anyplace else. They cater to a very affluent (even more so than Aspen or Vail) and therefore older crowd and so along with that there is more grooming work done. Those are two of the most obvious points off the top of my head, but if you let us know what worked or didn't work for you at that resort I can think of some other places that might be a good fit.

The Beav is OK, but it is a recently-built town without any cultural roots and it shows. Vail is close to the Beav, and has some great skiing, but after Aspen and Telluride, skiing Vail is like skiing a golf course. Its also an Interstate town - it has a little more soul than the Beav, but iyou can hear the trucks on I-70. Aspen has a wide variety of mountians to chose from and the town is killer, but there is sometimes a hint of haughty attitude.
Bottom line is that Telluride is the hardest to get to but us by far the nicest town - no atittude; don't ever need a car once you're there. There's great skiing and absolutely jaw-dropping scenery.

Go to Telluride. The others are nice...Telluride is the most difficult to get to...but there in lies the secret!! This means NO lift lines. Hit Aspen, Vail, or any other major I-70 resort on a weekend, and you can get lost in the lift lines...or at least have times to make new friends while standing in them and take in a game of UNO... In Telluride, you ski down, swoosh in and back up you go...and isn't that what you came for afterall...? Super town, super village, amazing snow and scenery that rivals the best European Alpine settings. All of this, with no attitude, and a welcoming community. Oh yeah, and the restaurants are great too... especially The Cosmopolitan!

I'm sorry but the previous post is incorrect about the lines in Aspen/Snowmass. In the last 7 years, I can count on one hand the times I have had to stand in line, and I ski on weekends and holidays when it is the most crowded. The only place I have ever stood in line was at the Fanny Hill lift (the bottom) and it was just after 9 when the ski schools head out. This year, with the changes at Snowmass, that won't even be a problem. Telluride IS wonderful, and Aspen is not an I70 resort.

They are all great in their own way. I love Aspen BUT Telluride took my breath away. (literally and figurativley). The scenery is stunning, great town, great accomodations and was not that expensive. Tough to get to but worth it.

I have to chime in with mtnlife here. Aspen/Snowmass is most definitely NOT an I70 resort and has 3 skiers per acre compared to the I70 resorts averaging 12 skiers per acre. Additionally, last year Snowmass changed their 4 person main lift to a 6 person, and on December 16 an 8 passenger gondola will be opening leaving from the bottom as well. Lift lines had never been a probably and will be even less now. And I do agree Telluride is absolutely beautiful!
