Itinerary ideas - trip from Moab to Durango and back to GR

My husband and I are flying into Grand Rapids and then plan on driving to Moab, then on to the Durango/Silverton area and then back North to GR. We are arriving June 30th and leaving on July 5th so we have a nice long week. I am getting really overwhelmed in trying to plan the trip and would love some ideas on how long we should stay in each place, etc. We like day hiking, general sightseeing, shopping, spas, outdoor excursions (zip lining, horseback riding, etc.). Any ideas on how to best use our time would be greatly appreciated!!

From Grand Rapids to Moab is around 1400 miles. It is a little more than 900 miles from Oklahoma City to Moab.

Oh goodness...that does seem crazy. I meant Grand Junction, CO. Not Grand Rapids! Sorry for the confusion.

July 4th in Grand Junction is really nice. If you like baseball the GJ Rockies will be having a home game at 7 pm with fireworks afterwards - really a nice display last year. I'll be there (season ticket holder). :) http://www.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t4364

Also a parade on the 4th at 10 am in downtown GJ. visitgrandjunction.com/independence-day-para… Downtown GJ has a famous Art on the Corner display - over 100 sculptures for you to see for free plus lots of great dining, shopping and museums. Travel & Leisure Magazine stated GJ is one of the coolest desert towns. Nice to hear.

The Fourth of July in sSilverton is amazing and one of the towns biggest events. If you can watch the fireworks there - you won't be disappointed.

Best Dinner in Durango is Ken & Sues. Best Breakfast is Durango (lunch is good at either too)

In my opinion, the "Soaring" zip lining is a must. It's an all day adventure and you can only get there by train but one of the most amazing experienced I have ever had. The price is a bit steep but undersyandable after the experience....plus you get a taste of the train! http://www.soaringtreetopadventures.com

Mesa Verde is super neat. Also the scenic Byway loop known as the "million dollar highway" is one of the top drives in the country. Seeing Silverton, Ouray (stop at their hot springs) and Telliride is some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever see!

Enjoy your trip!!...and welcome to Durango (in advance).

Must do's in Durango:

Mesa Verde

About a 45 minute drive to the park, another 30 to the sites in the park. In a day trip you can easily tour one of the 2 mesas (Chapin or Wetherill) and take one of the ranger tours.

Durango & Silverton RR.

You can ride both ways with a 2 hour stopover in Silverton, ride one way and take a bus the other, or take a train/jeep combo to take a jeep tour into the mountains above Silverton.

If you ride only one way, sit on the right side going from Durango to Silverton or on the left side if going from Silverton to Durango.

Moab will be hot in July..but still worth it..be an early riser, the desert and red rocks in the early morning coolness is great...hike to Delicate Arch in Arches Ntl Park, drive to Dead Horse Point. take a half day AM flat water float on the Colorado. Hike in early AM to Klondike Bluffs and see dinosaur tracks along the way.

If you mtn bike, this is Mecca...but Moab trails are mostly difficult, rocky ledges etc so .talk to local bike shops..rent a bike..again, AM only..lots of water, don't get lost. Consider a guided ride..if not a mtn biker..consider a guided jeep tour. Hide from mid afternoon heat..good time to shop, visitor center, motel pool. In Colorado, pot is legal...do not bring it into Utah tho. (well..at some risk ! All the hiding places you think of that seem so unique are well known, and a drug dog can find anything...so Rocky Mtn High stays in Colorado Rockies.
