It's hard to find savings on the train. Sometimes they offer coupons in the "Be local" coupon book and magazine....You could check there. Good luck!

Where are you staying? If you haven't booked lodging yet, you might look for a lodging/train ride package, which might give a little better price. If you have already booked, ask your hotel if they know of any discounts. The train's website also sometimes has discounts on their "hot deals" page.

I know it's not cheap, but the $85 (plus tax) is comparable to other tours I've taken, and here on Trip Advisor we rarely hear of anyone who doesn't think it was worth it, at least once. Between now and July, maybe you'll be able to figure a way to cut a few corners somewhere to add to your vacation budget. If not, you can see the museum and watch the train depart, then drive to Silverton and watch it arrive. The train ride gives you some great scenery (canyon/river views you can't see from the highway) and a historic perspective, but if it just isn't in the budget, don't worry...you're still going to see beautiful mountain scenery from the road.
