Jeep tour/Train pkg or not?

We loved our Jeep tour in Sedona so we are game for another jeep tour around Durango.

We also want to do the train to or from Silverton. I notice there are tours that bus you up and you do the Jeep tour to ghost towns and then they bring you back to Silverton for about 1 1/2 hours only - then onto train for return to Durango. Is an hour and a half enough time in Silverton? Basically, just lunch and a quick photo and then your are gone.

Would love to know what YOU did in this regard.

ALSO: Separate question: We have a week booked in Durango - but can get another week pretty reasonably. Can we fill two weeks with day trips or is one week enough. It has been 40 years since we visited this area and we are considering two weeks with lots of day excursions - using Durango as home base. Would love suggestions for day trips and personal experiences.

Thanks much. We will be visiting in late May/early June 2014. Do we have to worry about snow?

PS - on our previous trip we didn't see or do much - we just camped overnight and then headed back to Denver. So, there isn't much in the area that we have seen or done. Thanks much!!

Loved our jeep tour in Sedona. Really loved Silverton Jeep tour with San Juan Backcountry. Did not do in connection with train ride but you will get that recommendation from smart folks. so do it. BUT come back to Silverton by car ( on the way to Ouray) and do Gold Mine Tour. There are enough good restaurants in Sil. for several good meals.

We spent a month last year and 3 weeks this year in Durango so I am Ok with 2!!!. But one week and stays in Mesa Verde, Ouray, Telluride, Montrose (Black Canyon NP) would be an alternative. Or daytrips

So far - Sounds great! I think we need more time :0) May just do one week and drive on to PHX and spend time with family there and do a few day trips from there. Thanks for all the Durango tips!! I have printed them and will put them into my trusty 'trip folder' - I am just a tad anal that way :0)

We recently did the La Plata Canyon 4-wheel drive tour with Mild to Wild. Has a great time with Eric as our driver and guide!
