Hotel question - West Hollywood area

We visited California several years ago and stayed at the Best Western Plus Sunset Plaza hotel in W. Hollywood and loved it. We're planning another trip in a few months and the rate there for the same room we had previously has almost doubled. I would prefer to have a 2-bedroom suite where there's beds in separate rooms, as it will be myself, husband and 2 adult sons. I'm having a hard time finding a suite of this type or even regular rooms that are in our price range. Does anyone have any suggestions for the West Hollywood area or if that's going to be too expensive, where else would you suggest we stay that's not too far from that general area? Thanks for your help.

You can try Hollywood itself, as its generally less pricey than West Hollywood but is right next to West Hollywood. Orchid Suites I believe has two bedroom rooms or at least adjoining rooms that have a common door between them and is probably less expensive than the Best Western Sunset Plaza. Generally though actual hotel rooms with beds in separate rooms are pretty rare in LA. Your best hope would be adjoining or separate rooms somewhere.

Check out the Chamberlain West Hollywood, Le Montrose Suite Hotel and as last resort, Ramada Plaza on Santa Monica Blvd.

The suites at the Hollywood Orchid are just what we wanted and the price is good. Most of the reviews say the rooms are outdated and run down but for the most part, they are positive. Would you consider this a safe area? Would we be okay walking around at night? What would be within walking distance that you would recommend?

Just so you are aware, the BW Sunset Plaza is a strong 3-star property. The Orchid Suites is barely a 2-star. I wouldn't call it 'run down' but the baths are original (from the 1960's) with old tile, etc. This hotel used to be an apartment building. It's in Hollywood not in West Hollywood where the Sunset Plaza was (West Hollywood is a prettier and more upscale neighborhood).

The Orchid Suites is centrally-located in Hollywood, steps from the popular tourist attractions, e.g. the Chinese Theater, Hollywood Walk of Fame. It's perfectly safe.

I just want you to be aware that the Orchid Suites in Hollywood is not comparable to the Sunset Plaza in West Hollywood. If you provide us with your travel dates and budget, we might be able to find something more comparable to what you're used to.

We'll be traveling in June and I'm trying to keep it no more than $200/night. So it looks like we would have to decide between a standard room at a more modern, nicer hotel or a suite with separate sleeping areas at an older hotel.

You've summarized your options well.

Booking.com has the Park Plaza Lodge Hotel (an older 2-star that gets good ratings) for $120 per night PER ROOM. They have 2 room types: a 'queen room' with one queen bed for you and your husband and a 'standard double room' which has TWO full-size beds for your sons. The parking and wi-fi are free so you'd be able to have 2 separate rooms for you and your sons and parking included for about $240 per night. The hotel has a small pool.

Here are reviews for the hotel (link and scroll down for the reviews):

tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g32655-d630945-…

The property is a 6-minute walk from the Grove (http://www.thegrovela.com/)

and neighboring Farmers Market (http://www.farmersmarketla.com/) and a 3-mile drive to the both the Sunset Strip and central Hollywood. Here's a map:

Yes, this is a basic 'older 2-star' but it affords you and your sons some privacy and it's in a great area that isn't terribly touristy; at the same time, it's a short drive to all of your destinations.

The booking.com booking can be cancelled at no charge -- if you don't find something better. (Read the site's 'terms & conditions' regarding cancellation).

June is 'high season' so you'll need to book fairly soon in order to have the best choice. You haven't provided your exact travel dates, so we can't search for a deal for you. Prices will vary based upon the duration of your trip, whether it includes a weekend, etc.

Good luck!
