Take the Gondola to the top & hike from there. There are several trails from there.

A bit more strenuous is the Shirley Canyon trail. It starts down near the village. A recent poster on TA from Norway and doing a loop that included Lassen, Tahoe, & Yosemite said that Shirley Canyon was one of their favorite hikes.

We hiked Shirley canyon today (Dec 22nd) since we got bored of skiing the few runs that are open. A real estate agent we met on the lift recommended it to us (thank you!). A gorgeous hike. Beautiful views of the canyon. A nice activity for this holiday season with so little snow at Squaw. It took us about 4 hours (with two 9 year olds and a 11 year old) and was a bit difficult in some parts with some parts covered in snow but manageable in our sneakers (boots would be better but we didn't have them with us). We had to cross a couple of little frozen creeks but the kids thought that was fun. Just keep the main creek on your right as you hike up. Don't take the left fork in the snow up to High Camp. Follow the blue trail markers (we lost them a few times but got back on) and once you go up the left side of the frozen waterfall you'll get to the top of the rocks.
