Napa is a town and a valley; Sonoma is a town, a valley and a county. Napa town is a larger city, with a large selection of hotels, shops, restaurants, etc. The Napa Valley stretches north of the town of Napa, and has two main roads.. Hwy. 39 and the Silverado Trail. There are 3-4 popular towns along the valley -- Yountville, St. Helena, Calistoga, Oakville and more. Each offers a smaller town atmosphere, plus a downtown area in each with restaurants, hotels, etc. They are all surrounded by wineries, many of them big, familiar names.

Sonoma town is a smaller town, with a good selection of hotels, shops, restaurants, etc. The Sonoma Valley stretches northwest from the town of Sonoma, and has a single main road to Santa Rosa. The larger county of Sonoma reaches all the way from the Sonoma Valley (which is inland) to the coast. There are lots of smaller towns scattered through the Valley and the county -- Glen Ellen, Kenwood, Santa Rosa (a large city that has more in common with Napa than Sonoma), Healdsburg, Petaluma, Guerneville (in the Russian River), Bodega Bay (on the coast). There are wineries throughout the county, many of them smaller, family owned wineries.

Either area will offer a lot for a visitor... it just depends on what you're looking for.

Yountville in Napa is our favorite area to base ourself for 4 days at a time, but they are both great. If you really only have a short time, then head to Sonoma town for the day.

Hello and welcome! Both places are really nice areas of the CA wine country. What is your budget for lodging and how long do you have for your visit? :).
