Looking for good red wine

Not sure if I have the right forum. Have been to Napa and Sonoma multiple times. This will be the first time we have been to Santa Barbara wine country. We are actually staying in Solvang. We like most reds looking for Zins, syrahs, pinots. Any suggestion for quality vineyards would be appreciated. We usually like small to medium sized places. Thanks

If you really want an adventure, drive up Foxen Canyon Road to Rancho Sisquoc Winery. You'll see California as it was in pioneer days and at the end of the dusty trail discover some of the best wine anywhere in a secluded rancho headquarters that hasn't changed in 100 years. If you don't have time for that, just go to Rideau's historic adobe on Alamo Pintado where Andy Ibarra and Iris Rideau are making magic.

I agree, love Rancho Sisquoc, they used to make a really good Cabernet Franc.

Definitely hit "downtown" Los Olivos, within a few blocks you'll have many choices. Stolpman is a favorite; my favorite reds in the area. Carhartt has nice wines that are reasonably priced for the area, and the tasting room is a fun little shack of sorts. Zaca Mesa has very nice syrahs. One of our favorite restaurants in the area is Mattei's Tavern: http://matteistavern.com/ Incredible food, great menu, good wine list, historic location. Enjoy!

In Solvang, visit the Dascomb Winery tasting room. We joined their wine club based on the quality of the Syrah (the '04s especially!). The '07 Pinot Noir was also very good.

In Los Olivos, Stolpman and Blair Fox had some of the best reds of the day! Matei's Tavern has actually closed and is now Sides Hardware and Shoes, a Brother's Restaurant. While I have not personally been there yet (Plan on going this weekend!), it got great Yelp reviews. Cheers!

In Los Olivos, check out Andrew Murray and Arthur Earl for some outstanding Syrah. :)

Check out Melville for quality single-vineyard pinot noir. Fess Parker is a good source for a variety of good reds -- pinot noir, syrah, cabernets...
