Weekend March 9-10, Special Event in Solvang Area?

We are flying in and were waiting to make plans based on the weather. Since we like to road bike, we were hoping to visit Solvang or Santa Ynez but there seems to be no lodging available....even for 2 nights. Does anyone know if there is a wine based event or some sporting event taking up the rooms. Any suggestions beyond Solvang that might not be too long of a drive and would include biking/ wine tasting, etc. Paso seems so far but San Luis Obispo might be doable.

The weather is due to be nice and warm for your visit....not sure if there is an event but with the nice weather rooms have been filling up fast this past month.

For another nearby area for lodging, try Los Alamos just 15 minutes up the road from Solvang. Biking from here actually gives you more access to nice rides including Foxen Canyon (take frontage road from Los Alamos south to Alisos Canyon then on to Foxen Canyon)

Three choices for lodging in Los Alamos:

Skyview Motel http://theskyviewmotel.com/

1880 Union Hotel http://www.unionhotelvictmansion.com/

Victorian Mansion http://www.thevick.com/

If you stay in Los Alamos, or even if you go for just a visit, be sure to grab a dinner at American Flatbread Pizza. And there is a new tasting room in town called Babi's that is getting good reviews.

Looks like that's when the "Taste of Solvang" is going on, so lodgings in that area will be hard to come by.

San Luis Obispo has a lovely wine region just a few miles south of town in Edna Valley. Edna Valley is also popular with cyclists. You could do a route along Orcutt Road to Lopez Drive to Highway 227 back to SLO.

Additional fun things to so in the area include renting a hot springs tub at Sycamore Mineral Springs, take a Hummer ride out in the Pismo/Oceano Dunes or even skydive or do a Bi-plane ride. Downtown SLO is quite nice with lots of shops, restaurants and coffee bars.

I love the Santa Ynez Valley! It will be crowded with such an event, but there are lots of back roads to explore. Take a look at the road from Buellton out to Jalama Beach, where you will find a county beach, bathrooms, lunch counter and an endless beach to explore.

North up Hwy 101 near SLO is Montana de Oro State Park, right on the water, great cliffs to hike as well, just a beautiful place. It is north of Pismo, which is an excellent visit as well.

(Did you look at Buellton for lodging? Mostly chains, but certainly close to Santa Ynez and environs)

It looks like Taste of Solvang is the following weekend but there seems to be a big bike ride event. We are familiar with SLO...visited there a few year's back along with Pismo Beach but had hoped to stay a little closer to Santa Barbara.

We might even consider Paso Robles -- is there any biking there?
