Is it possible to visit Sausalito while in San Francisco if you do not have a car?
There are ferries, from either Fisherman's Wharf or the Ferry Building. And buses as well.
Where is your starting point? And what day of the week/time of day do you want to go?
The ferry is one of the best ways to get there, even if you have a car available. On a nice day, the ride past Alcatraz, gazing at the Golden Gate Bridge... it's all magical!
We will be straying at Union Square in mid May. Thank you for the tips.
We took the ferry to Sausalito for a day when in SF for our 10-day 40th anniversary trip. Did a lot of shopping and browsing the waterfront shops and had a fabulous lunch at Scoma's. One of our favorite memories of that trip.
The Blue & Gold leave out of Pier 41 at Fisherman's Wharf.
Golden Gate Transit leaves from the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street.
Either of those areas can be accessed from Union Square via the F=Market & Wharves historic trolley which runs on Market. Or you can take the Powell/Mason cable car to Fisherman's Wharf.
A popular outing is to rent bikes at Fisherman's Wharf, cycle along the bay, across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito and ferry back. If that's of interest there is a Top Question (right side of screen) which links to a Traveller Article with all the details.
We are going today via Muir woods on a organised tour there are lots of tour companies to book from on the net or when you get to San Fran.
