Bike riding in Sonoma County

I am planning a trip in Sept or Oct 2009 and wonder what town is best for biking around the town and to vineyards. Not interested in joining biking tours which have you biking 20 miles a day. Just want to do short stints and enjoy the scenery and vineyards. I plan to take an airport shuttle because I do not drive so I need to select the best town to do the most activites (bke, ballon rides, wine tasting etc) Any suggestions

Best to stick to either Healdsburg or Sonoma town if you won't have your own car. Unfortunately, our county doesn't have extensive or timely public transportation like you're used to in NYC. The city of Santa Rosa has the most options but it's not as convenient to vineyards and other scenic locales if you don't have a car. You will need to be flexible in your planning. If you're arriving in Oakland or San Francisco, here are a couple of sites to research for travel to Sonoma County: healdsburg.com/getting_here/transportation.a… and www.sonomaairporter.com

The Sonoma County Airport Express goes from either airport to Santa Rosa, the furthest north.

There are no "shuttles" which serve the towns you are speaking of.

So you would need to find a way to get to a location where you can ride a bike and do what you want.

As Forestvillian said, we do not have good public transportation.

Perhaps there is a local bus which can take you srom Santa Rosa to one of the towns, once you get into Santa Rosa.

The same is true of the Napa Valley. Evans Transportation has airporters which go to the city of Napa, but then to get to one of the towns in the valley you are on your own.

Perhaps somebody local knows how to solve this problem?

Puter--is the Sonoma Airporter no longer operating? It's still up on the 2009 scheduled transportation for SFO, but I don't know if that's totally up to date. It served Sonoma, Glen Ellen, Kenwood and Oakmont with one-way fare of $50, I believe. I really think that BayEmerald would be better off just renting a car.

You are right....here is the website.

http://www.sonomaairporter.com/

I didn't know it existed. When I goggled all I got was the Sonoma County Express. Used to have to pick up people in Petaluma if they were visiting in Sonoma.

bayemerald, we think it might be difficult for you to do what you want using public transportation.

However, if the Sonoma Airporter works for you, there is information in the Visitor's Bureau in the Plaza in Sonoma on where to get bicycles and maps for riding around the vineyards.

Good luck.
