Santa Monica for 30 year old woman - things to do and see!!

I'm travelling alone to Santa Monica probably end of October / November.

Does anyone have recommendations for things to do there if you're on your own or activites where you can meet other people?

Any general advice about great places, travelling around etc would be a massive help.

Thank you very much in advance.

Generally speaking...

a) the 3rd St. Promenade is a 3 block-long outdoor shopping center with lots of people strolling around, especially nights and weekends. Tons of shopping and restaurants here and on the surrounding streets (plus the Santa Monica Place mall at the south end of the Promenade for even more shopping and restaurants) along with street performers.

b) the Santa Monica Pier and the beach are close to the Promenade. On the beach you can rent a bike and bike along the bike path, as far south as Venice Beach pretty easily. Once in Venice Beach, you can head inland to Abbot Kinney Blvd. (lots of boutique shopping / restaurants) or explore the canals. The pier in Santa Monica features a full carnival, complete with Ferris Wheel and a roller coaster.

c) Main Street is similar to Abbot Kinney Blvd. - lots of boutique shopping, restaurants and bars.

It sounds like you won't have a car. There's lots of things outside of Santa Monica that you may want to do. I recomend Google Maps (maps.google.com) for finding out how to get places via public transit. When you go to that site, type in the name of your hotel and your destination - i.e. "Huntley Hotel, Santa Monica, CA to California Science Center" - first it will show you how to go via car, but if you click the bus/train icon, and then select the day of the week and the time of the day that you want to go, it will show you what buses / trains etc. to use to get there.

Generally, the most useful bus routes from Santa Monica will be Big Blue Bus (www.bigbluebus.com) #10 which is an express bus to downtown LA, and then Metro (www.metro.com) bus 704 on Santa Monica Blvd. and 720 on Wilshire Blvd.

#10 bus goes to Union Station in downtown LA, which is the main public transit hub for LA. From Union Station, you can walk across the street to Olvera St. (site of the first settlement that eventually became the city of Los Angeles), take the Gold Line light rail train to Little Tokyo, China Town, or Pasadena (a fun area to walk around with lots of shops and restaurants, plus the Norton Simon museum which is great), take the Red Line subway to various stops in downtown LA, and also take the subway to the 7th St. Metro Center station. At the 7th St. Metro Center, you can take the Blue Line light rail train to downtown Long Beach (RMS Queen Mary, Aquarium of the Pacific) or take the Expo Line light rail train to the California Science Center (home of the space shuttle Endeavor), the LA County Natural History Museum, or downtown Culver City which is a lively area with lots of restaurants.

720 goes to the Westwood / UCLA area where you'll find the Hammer Museum and Westwood Memorial Park, and also stops in Beverly Hills near the famous Rodeo Drive, and over at "museum row" near Wilshire Blvd. and Fairfax Ave. where you'll find the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Petersen Automotive Museum, and the Page Museum / La Brea Tar Pits. The bus then passes through Korea Town before ultimately arriving in downtown LA. You can also connect with bus 761 in Westwood to go to the famous Getty Center museum in Brentwood.

704 also goes to the Rodeo Drive / Beverly Hills area, passes through the southern parts of Hollywood and West Hollywood before heading to downtown LA. You can use this bus to connect to other buses that will take you to the touristy part of Hollywood at Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave., to The Grove mall and the adjacent Farmer's Market complex, and to the big shopping area around the massive Beverly Center Mall.

You may also want to look into taking an organized tour. www.starlinetours.com is the largest tour operator in LA and I would suggest their Hop-On/Hop-Off tour which covers a large part of the city and unlike other tours, provides many opportunities to exit the bus and explore on your own.

All of the Santa Monica bars have very popular Happy Hours, and you 'll meet lots of friendly people. Where will you be staying, exactly?

Here's a list of Happy Hours - it's extensive, and broken down by neighborhood:

You'll have a great time, I'm sure. October is typically beautiful, clear weather and there should be plenty of opportunities for walking around and enjoying the sights, or just relaxing on the beach. Depending on what you like to do, different neighborhoods will appeal to you more than others. I find that the Venice Bistro on the Venice Beach Boardwalk is a great place for travelers to meet others from out of town. It doesn't have the ambiance or food or drink quality of several other nearby establishments, like the Venice Ale House and On the Waterfront, but it offers live music on weekends and an eclectic crowd, as well as front row seats to the boardwalk people watching.

Great cafes and restaurants, as well as cool local bars line the Main St. area of Santa Monica, such as O'Brians Pub, which has live music and a fairly international crowd. Up in downtown Santa Monica is Ye Olde King's Head and the Britannia pubs, both of which entertain many international visitors. There are also often fun events at out-of-the-way places, like the TRiP on Lincoln Boulevard, which has local live music every night and a mellow, unpretentious vibe, and the Basement on Main St has amazing music as well many nights of the week. There's also a really fun karaoke night at the Gaslight, great blues music at Harvelle's and a burlesque night and comedy night in the speakeasy of the Townhouse on Windward. Hope these recommendations help, they are geared to your looking to meet people of your age group at places where you might find people of similar interests. Good luck and enjoy your travels!
