Change of mind on accommodation..

I had every intention of staying at the Shore hotel, but cannot justify spending $35 a day on parking...that's a rip off!!!!!

Can anyone suggest another hotel close to the action for a family of 4? Hopefully the parking will be a little cheaper....

Parking at every hotel in LA and SM is about $30-$40 a night. That's just the reality. Some hotels don't charge extra for parking, but they fold it into their rate so you don't think of it as a separate charge. Just go with your plan to stay at the Shore, it's a great hotel in a great location.

Every property in Santa Monica that would be considered a full-fledged hotel will charge a similar amount for parking. Some motels might not but of course the room and the property in general won't be as nice. Of course, anyone who sees something like $35 for parking and thinks of it as a separate fee is going to feel ripped off- $35 for parking IS outlandish, no doubt about it. The best advice I can give is to just add the $35 into the room rate. That's the real question - is the overall cost of the hotel including the room rate worth it, or not? If, for example, you're getting The Shore for $250 / night + $35 / parking, ask yourself if you think the hotel is worth $285 / night with free parking. If yes, stick with it, if no, look somewhere else, but as Yogachick says, every hotel in SM is going to have similar parking charges. They charge that much because they can get away with it - there's really no overnight parking options nearby these hotels for non-residents.
