traveling through Santa Barbara

My husband, our two older teen boys and myself are traveling through Santa Barbara down the pacific coast highway on our way to Santa Monica and we were hoping that the Tripadvisor community could offer their opinions on which attraction/site we should take in. We have a very short period of time, probably 2-3 hours.

Also if you could recommend a reasonably casual place to eat (local not touristy) we would be ever so grateful.

Thank you again,

Hmm. How does one tell the locals from the tourists? I can't think of many touristy places in SB, the few chain restaurants that there are, though, are well-used by locals.

What's your budget and what kind of food do you like? The list of good restaurants is really long and won't be of much help to you in choosing if they are not the right kind of food. Some of our friends and family really want seafood in SB, some want sushi, some want French, many want Italian, some want Mexican, some want good wine list, some don't care, SB has all of those and more.

This website is an accurate list and review of restaurant "best of" annual winners: http://santabarbara.com/dining/best_of_sb/

Our local weekly entertainment newspaper also conducts annual restaurant "best of" polls: http://www.independent.com/news/best-of/

There really are a lot of good restaurants in Santa Barbara. Where would I take visiting friends out for a good tasty meal?

<Seafood> Brophy Bros or Enterprise Fish.

<French> Bouchon.

<Cajun> Palace Grill.

<American> Jeanine's, Jane, Downey's, Opal, Stella Mare, Scarlett Begonia, or Chuck's on Upper State.

<Mexican> Los Agaves, Cielito, Los Arroyos, Rose's on the Mesa, or Super-Rica.

<Chinese> Szechuan or China Pavilion.

<Italian> Olio e Limone, Arnoldi's, Trattoria Vittoria.

<Japanese (sushi)> Sakana, Arigato, or Edomasa.

<Middle Eastern> Zaytoon.

My list is shorter for sights to see with not much time to see them - The Mission, Stearns Wharf and the Harbor, the Courthouse, the Botanic Garden, Lotusland. You only have time to see one of these.
