bed & breakfast

Has anyone stayed at Purfrocks garden Inn by the beach, and how did you like it??? 2 ladies looking for modest priced b&b for 3-4 nights, will be traveling by train from San Diego. Will we need a car or is there transportation to shopping/dinning and Solvang???

I just looked at Purfrocks Garden Inn's website. They are in Carpinteria on Linden Ave. Carpinteria is a quiet, moderately charming small town, great for relaxing at the "World's Safest Beach". It is so small, you won't need transportation to shopping and dining - you can walk to it all. But...

Carpinteria is about 20 minutes driving time south of Santa Barbara. There are buses between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, but I never take them, so I'm not much help there.

You might try to get on the shuttle for the Chumash Casino to get free (I think) transport to Solvang. It doesn't appear that they go to Carpinteria. The Casino is about 0.8 mile west of Solvang. chumashcasino.com/infodesk/shuttleschedule.c…

Carpinteria would be a great place to base yourself for the south coast, but I would prefer to have a car.

Otherwise, in Santa Barbara...

Transportation for the State St area, Courthouse, Art Museum, and the beach (Cabrillo Ave) is well served by the shuttle that costs a quarter. http://www.sbmtd.gov/waterfront.html

Otherwise, it's a far walk to try to get to our Mission or Botanic Garden. Although of course, there is a taxi, and the bus. (but again I am unsure about bus service)

Other fun things are hiking in the front side of the Santa Ynez Mountains, or swimming in the Santa Ynez River which are going to be tough without a car or taxi. (A taxi to the SY River would cost too much.) http://www.santabarbarahikes.com/index.shtml

I drove by Purfrocks Garden Inn, today. Let me modify my previous post by saying that Carpinteria is a charming small town. The Garden Inn looks very nice from the outside. It is very well located at about 1 block from the beach on Linden Ave. Linden Ave is the main street of Carpinteria. There are lots of restaurants. The Spot is popular for burgers, etc. Cajun Kitchen is great for breakfast. Senor Frogs makes a great wet burrito and enchiladas. The Palms has steak, which you can cook yourself if you want, and occasionally has entertainment too. All within walking distance. (Santa Barbara is still 20 minutes north.)

Today was a beautiful sunny day. The water looked quite inviting with very small waves. A swimming platform was set out in the water at the end of Linden.

If you want to be in Santa Barbara, rather than Carpenteria (which is about 5-7 miles SOUTH of Santa Barbara, you might want to check out the Old Yacht Club Inn. It's a B&B and It's 1 block from the beach in Santa Barbara and relatively close to the SB train station. Reasonable rates, and full breakfast included.

I'm sorry, amend my last post to read Carpinteria is about 11-12 miles SOUTH of Santa Barbara. :)
