There is easy beach access just south of the hotel property. You'll see it where the side street dead ends.
There are not a lot of great restaurants in San Simeon, but there are really good options a few miles/minutes south in Cambria.
Robin's is a cozy option with an international menu made with fresh ingredients (nothing comes out of a can here): http://www.robinsrestaurant.com/
Sow's Ear: Consistently voted Most Romantic restaurant on the Central Coast: http://www.thesowsear.com/
Black Cat Bistro is a foodies fave (closed 2 nights out of the week):
Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill for seafood. Nothing fancy, but great ocean view dining with pretty Moonstone Beach across the street:
The Sea Chest (also on Moonstone Beach Drive, but come with cash. They don't accept credit cards): http://www.seachestrestaurant.com/
Cambria Pines Lodge has a diverse American menu. This is where you'll find that steak. I hear the food here is very good: www.cambriapineslodge.com/Restaurant.htm
