Beaches near Cambria?

We're staying 2 nights in Cambria - visiting Hearst Castle and the elephant seals, but mostly taking a mini-break between time in LA and San Francisco. Can someone recommend a nearby beach for swimming and a day or relaxation?

The ocean water in this area is very cold and not conducive for swimming for long periods of time without a wet suit. Plus, rip tides (undertow currents that can pull you out to sea) are a common occurrence. Moonstone Beach in Cambria is best for walks and gem hunting (Hence the name: Moonstones). Cayucos & Morro Bay (15 & 20 miles south of Cambria) have the best beaches for attempting to get in the water, but, again, very cold for swimming.

The stretch of beach north of Morro Rock is perfect for walking on the beach and getting out pretty far into the surf and still being in shallow water. But as Kibblesmom says, the water here is cold and the rip tides dangerous, so swimming isn't really something to do unless you have a wet suit. The rips are worse as you go north towards Cambria. Morro Bay is only 25 minutes south of Cambria, so not a bad drive...and there are plenty of good restaurants where you can have lunch before returning to Cambria.
