Interesting things to do from San Francisco to SLO

My boyfriend and I are driving down the coast from San Francisco to San Luis Obispo. Any good suggestions on what we should on the way or in SLO? Thanks!

Hi there

I responded to your other post, but I'll give you some other suggestions for the SLO area.

San Luis Obispo County is wine country. If you're 21 years old+ you can enjoy wine tasting in Paso Robles (north of SLO) or in the Edna Valley (just south of SLO). Both areas offer pretty countryside and some pretty decent wines. We have a factory outlet 15 miles to the south of SLO in Pismo Beach, along with a nice walking beach, pier and funky downtown here. Avila Beach is a warmer/sunnier beach option with two piers and beach fronts shops.

A few miles south of Pismo Beach is Arroyo Grande, which has a western themed shopping village east of the Grand Ave freeway off-ramp. There's a nice little park behind the south side shops with a gazebo and swinging bridge.

Again, there's Montana de Oro west to SLO, which has a nice trail out to a bluff overlooking the ocean. If the tide is out, you can access the small beach from the bluff and do some tidepooling. The drive to this find is through some lovely countryside with farms and ranches and the small town of Los Osos.

There's hiking at Bishop's Peak, which is a dormant volcano (part of the 7 Sisters volcano's that ends with Morro Rock in Morro Bay).

If you have the time, take Highway 1 (aka Pacific Coast Highway/Cabrillo Highway) on the way down; keep in mind it's a Very winding road that parallels the coastline and takes a lot of time given the slow driving.

There's plenty of sights to take in along the way, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur and Hearst Castle in particular and will take you right to Morro Bay which is only 10 minutes from SLO.

Just Google Earth Highway 1 from Monterey to Morro Bay/SLO and you'll see the drive.

Enjoy Cali.

Pssst, BTW this is a Must See in SLO if you're not aware it exists; it's downtown on Higuera Street. Just ask someone where Bubble Gum Alley is and you're good to go:

Don't forget to buy some gum before hand and leave your mark.
