Day Trip to San Clemente on Metrolink

We are planning a trip via Metrolink from Ventura County to San Clemente mid-October. We will have approximately 5-6 hours to visit. We are senior citizens and unable to do much walking but would like to visit shops and other highlights.

Are there buses from the Metrolink stop near Avenida Pico that would take us closer to the pier and the shops/restaurants that we hear about in that area? Or are there points of interest for us to visit near the Metrolink station near Avenida Pico itself? We enjoy museums, sightseeing and just looking around.

Thank you.

There is a bus that passes by the metrolink station at North Beach. That would get you closer to Del Mar street, which is the main downtown shopping and restaurant area.In the summer on weekends Metrolink stops at the pier, with the train that comes from Riverside.

There is not really too much to see near the station,(except the ocean or the Ole Hanson Pool)unless you walk. This is where the new beach trail/boardwalk starts that heads to the pier.Probably too far for you to walk.

Not sure if there is transportation from Del Mar shopping area down to the pier bowl area. Its a rather steep hill.At the top of that hill is Casa Romantica, that often has interesting displays. The latest is how Nixon brought San Clemente into the news when he had the western White House here.

If you do get down to the pier, there is a nice restaurant that sits on the pier called The Fisherman.

Your best bet is to check with Orange County Transportation Authority for a bus schedule. They may have a small bus that heads to the pier, not sure.

I'm not really an expert, but it might be better to take Amtrak (yes it costs more) but it goes to San Clemente Pier where I believe you would find more interesting things to see and do (restaurants, shops, etc.).

If you insist on Metrolink, there appears to be local buses i.e. OCTA #191 that connect the Avenida Pico Station to the Pier area, but you would have to check Metrolink and OCTA schedules to see if that would work.

Separately, the Metrolink/Amtrak station in San Juan Capistrano is close to restaurants, shops and the very interesting old mission there...well worth a visit.

There are probably four or five restaurants near the pier.If you want shopping, you will still need to head up the hill to the main Del Mar shopping area.

San Juan is a good destination also,if you didn't have to see the ocean.Several shops and restaurants (and the Mission) are really close to the station. You could probably walk that as it is pretty flat, and close together.

El Adobe is a nice restaurant ,with an interesting historical jail/wine cellar that seats 6-8 people.
