Need ONE REASON to visit Sacramento--driving through...

We're from FLORIDA driving through Sacramento on our way to Lake Tahoe. If there was one thing we HAD TO SEE in Sacramento, what would you recommend?

No water parks, no white water rafting, no hiking--we're doing that stuff elsewhere.

Should we just drive thru and keep going to Lake Tahoe or is there this one or two things that are a "MUST SEE" in your town?

Thanks for your guidance!

Of those 4 mentioned by nsgw, I'd pick either the Capitol or the Railroad Museum. There is admission charge for the museum. For the Capitol, they conduct free tours. However, if it's a weekday, you may have problem finding parking in that area.

The State Railroad Museum, which is in Old Sacramento, which is a historic preservation district, which is right next to the Sacramento River, which is just off I-5 a few miles from Hwy 50 which goes to Tahoe.

The California State Railroad Museum is probably the best atttraction to see this time of year- totally inside, lots to see and do, and ample parking in the adjacent parking garage. You can catch a meal in any number of fine restaurants nearby in Old Town- Rio City, Fats, Ten22- to name a few.

The tours of the State Capitol are interesting, informative, no two alike and happen every hour on the hour usually. But I would rate this as a second choice for an out of towner looking for a diversion on the way to Tahoe.

The Crocker is wonderful, but I could spend hours, days there- its really one of the best art museums on the west coast. A short visit is not recommended. A brief visit here would be like trying to see the Ringling Museum and grounds in 30 minutes, n'est-ce pas?

Definitely the Railroad Museum and while you're there take in Old Sacramento and the Delta King.

You can do the State Capitol tour too but only if you promise to take a few of the politicians back home with you or at least throw them in The Lake . I agree that the Capitol is second to the RR Museum.

The tours of underground Sacramento in the Old Sacramento district are interesting and unusual. Due to flooding, the city was raised above the original street level. The tour takes you through the oldest parts of the city below current street level. The tours are popular and you will probably need to make reservations if you decide to do this.
