I will be visiting Sacramento next week and I am interested in knowing about the museums worth visiting in this city. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Railroad Museum, Crocker, Museum of History, those are the ones I like best. Here you can read about them and more:

Second the idea of the Crocker and the Railroad Museum (latter isn't just for train fans). There are guided walks from the railroad museum at certain times of the year. About $10, I think. Best to sign up in advance. Another interesting museum is the California Automobile Museum, walkable from Old Sacramento http://www.calautomuseum.org/ Sutters Fort State Historic Park is sort of a museum http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=485 We also found the free tour of the California Capitol quite enjoyable and informative. Lots of info about California history. The grounds around the capitol are nice.

I love the California Railroad Museum in Old Town Sacramento as well. One not to miss. Very impressive exhibits of rolling rail stock, and a roundhouse to boot! These locomotives get serviced and run on a periodic basis, and some visitors may also arrange to be passengers (best to do this beforehand, though).

The State Capitol building in Sacramento, while not a musuem, is historic in and of itself. Recently restored these days too! I've taken many a class of schoolkids there on day tours. . . these happen all the time, btw. I could say something sharptongued about the denizens of the place, but. . . hey, this is a travel and tour forum. Feel free to ignore 'em. Beautiful architecture and grounds.

The California Museum is all about history. . . California's rich and impressive story about the Golden State itself. I've never been to it, but as a Kevin Starr aficionado, one of the historians of California of late, I've heard plenty about it. Check it out! Here's the link: http://www.californiamuseum.org/

How long will you be in the area, Kara? With your enthusiasm about the museums, I hope you get to visit several and will report back here on your experience for everyone's benefit. These types of threads (when full of information) are always helpful to others and are candidates to move to Top Questions so have a great time and let us know how it went.

I'd recommend the old Governor's mansion and the Leland Stanford manion as well. Both provide a great little snippet of CA history and have displays inside...
