Hi,
Currently thinking about our vacation next summer, and we are planning on a few days in NY then travelling onto CA, with our first stop at Pismo Beach.
However, rather than flying to SFO or LAX, I was wondering if there is an airport nearer that has direct flights from New York? Would be grateful if anyone could let me know if there is.

JetBlue has direct flights to San Jose and that's as close as you're going to get without a connecting flight to Pismo Beach. San Jose to Pismo would be approx. a 3 hour drive.

Monterey would be closer than San Jose, of course, but a direct flight from NY is doubtful, yes?
Edited: 4:04 pm, August 22, 2012Remember that you guys really mean "non stop flights" not "direct". Technically a "direct" flight can land in a city between but you still have the same flight no. and don't change planes. Non stop is the kind that starts in NYC and ends in California.
You can fly into San Luis Obispo but you'd have to first fly to LAX and then change planes there.
Edited: 4:08 pm, August 22, 2012I would suggest you look at www.kayak.com and chose nearest airports and your NY and Pismo locations and see what the airfares are. Non-stops across the country and primarily to major metro airports with very few exceptions.
Have a look at jetblue.com and Southwest.com and Virginamerica.com as options as well.
RiffM is correct about the distinction between direct and non-stops.

The cost of flights from LAX to San Luis Obispo is outrageous. More than your flight from New York. The most practical way to get to Pismo is to just drive from LAX -- about 3 hours. Same 3 hours south from San Jose.

One more option which hasn't been addressed yet....
Take a flight from JFK to LAX and then take the hop to Santa Barbara. The drive from Santa Barbara is only anout 90 minutes.
I did a cursory check on Expedia and found one-way for $170
Just thought I would throw that option out there.....

Yeah, the closest commercial airport to Pismo Beach is in San Luis Obispo, which would require a connecting flight from LAX or SFO.

Wow. Expensive. SWA gets us from SFO to San Diego, usually, for about $89.
Yeah, I know it's pricey but I thought I would mention it anyways.
The OP never really stated an issue with finances just that he/she wanted something close by.
