Where to stay in Palo Alto |
|
Hi,
I'm off to Palo Alto on Nov. 27 for 6 days to visit my husband's aunt. I'll be there on my own this time. Any recommendations as to where to stay? Two years ago my husband and I stayed at the Starwood Motel near Stanford. It was fantastic, cozy, charming...but a bit pricey. Prefer something nice, but not as expensive as I'm on my own.
Thanks,
Funnybone

A little more information, here. In dollars, what is "not as expensive" and in a few woreds description, what is "nice?" You haven't given us much to go on, and from the motel example you've given, it's not easy to figure out what you want. There are many, many motels and hotels in the area, and some may be better than others, depending on what your needs are (will you have a car, for example? Do you need to be close to your aunt's place and have no transportation, for another thing?) On El Camino Real, there are a wealth of properties at every price range. From the lower end, there's the Mermaid Inn, and the upper end near Stanford Shopping Center, there's the Stanford Park Hotel. But I'm unfamiliar with a property called the Starwood Motel in Palo Alto, so I'm at a loss to advise you.

Try Priceline if you are ok to go that route...friends of mine found places nearby for $50 - $60 a night recently using that service in the area. The Travel Lodge in Palo Alto is doing a 4 for 5 nights, meaning the 5th night is free. Since you are staying 6 days, that would help. The lace is centrally located on El Camino.

Ooops. I actually stayed at the Stanford Park Hotel two years ago, not Starwood. I made a few calls, checked the Palo Alto forum and decided to book at a very reasonably priced hotel called "Country Inn Motel" at 4345 El Camino Real. TA gave it quite favourable reviews. I usually stay at more upscale hotels, but this one seemed cheap ($76/night incl. tax), cheerful and clean, really all I need at this point. Also closer to my aunt than Stanford Park. Did I do the right thing< Open to feedback or other suggestions. Thanks All.

The Country Inn Motel is in a peaceful, suburban area. There are other hotels/motels nearby, so you could always give Priceline a try if you're feeling lucky. You'll be walking distance from the San Antonio Shopping Center, which is a mediocre (but not bad) mall with Walmart, Sears, Rasputin (record store), and various chain restaurants. There's also a Target across the street from the Walmart. You'll probably want to drive to downtown Palo Alto or downtown Mountain View for restaurants, nightlife, etc., assuming you have the time.
