Winter trip to Oroville; where are nearest ski resorts?

will be working in Oroville over new year's and want to bring family along for a few days before and during for skiing or snow fun(been living in Hawaii). Is south Lake Tahoe too difiicult to drive? are there any local small mts/hills for skiing(kids have only been in snow once!)

any advice appreciated

The closest resort to Oroville is Boreal. South Lake Tahoe isn't close to Oroville. You should look at the 12 ski resorts on the north side of the lake rather than the 3 ski resorts on the south side of the lake.

You could also consider Mt Shasta ski resort to the north.

You can find links to the north shore resorts from here:

thanks much for the info; we have not driven in snowy conditions for 4-5 years too so anything closer is appreciated, esp with limited free time

You could head to Mt Shasta. You'd be on hwy 99 and I-5 the entire route. A lot of people here prefer Shasta to Tahoe. We have a small hill here--Coppervale--but you'd be driving a lot of the ways on windy mountain roads (hwy 70, which is stunningly gorgeous. or hwy 32 also pretty. Hwy 32 has a longer section that will have ice and snow. Hwy 70 usually doesn't have snow)

Oh, Mt Shasta is about 2.5 hours from Oroville.

Boreal is the closest. The students going to Chico go to Boreal because that's the first resort you come too. If there were one closer I would have suggested that. Sorry, nothing closer than Boreal.

Oroville to the ski resort near Mt Shasta is about 3 hours. Oroville to Boreal is 2 hours. Boreal is right on 80 the ski resort inMt Shasta is east of the town.

At about the same distance as Boreal (and nearby) are Donner Ski Ranch and Sugar Bowl. Donner is a favorite of mine for a smaller, low-key ski area.
