Winter trip to Oroville; where are nearest ski resorts?

will be working in Oroville over new year's and want to bring family along for a few days before and during for skiing or snow fun(been living in Hawaii). Is south Lake Tahoe too difiicult to drive? are there any local small mts/hills for skiing(kids have only been in snow once!)

any advice appreciated

The Lake Tahoe/Donner Summit area is probably the closest accessible area. Other people can give you some more details, but as for the drive - as long as it isn't actively snowing while you are driving, it is easy. You'd take Hwy 80 to the north end of Lake Tahoe or Hwy 50 to the south end.

You can also go up to the Mt. Lassen area - North on Hwy 70 to 99 to Hwy 36 east. I think that is farther from Lake Tahoe, but because it isn't as popular of an area, you won't have the same traffic.

In CA, snow is usually a function of elevation, so you just have to get high enough in the mountains.

If you are just looking for snow to play in rather than actually skiing, then head east on Hwy 20 until you get to the snow - usually east of Nevada City somewhere. Sometimes there is snow as low as Nevada City, but generally not enough to play in. When you find snow, pull over and play. Be careful about no-tresspassing signs for private property, but a lot of land up that way is national forest, so anybody can use it. That's what we always do when we are in that area and want to play in the snow.

From Oroville you would go south on 70 to Marysville and then east on 20.

Hi November_Moon,

Do you mean skiing at Mt Lassen? You'd take hwy 99 from 149 to Chico, then head up hwy 32 east, then take hwy 36 to the left at the T (west, I think). It's about 2 hours if you're driving really slow. There's lots of ice on hwy 32. It has 30 miles of windy section with no cell reception & nothing at all except nature for more than that.

Skiing at Mt Lassen is for people experienced in back country snow travel. There aren't any facilities other than the nice visitors center. It's extremely beautiful and quiet.

The OP has a double posting. There were some responses on his other post as well.

Boreal, Donner Ski Ranch, and Sugar Bowl would be the closest places.

If you want to try beginning skiing and play in the snow, I'd advise Donner Ski Ranch. It's a very small, non-intimidating hill. I'll guess it's about two or two-and-a-half hours away from Oroville.
