Oceanside, CA Trip with Teenagers

We are looking at staying at a home in Oceanside this July/Aug with 2 families - kids ranging from 12-21 years of age. Would this be a good vacation spot? How much influence does the base have on the beaches/town? Any helpful information would be great

The marine base is the largest employer in the town. The beach istself is a nice wide, white sandy beach with a pier that has a Rubys Diner out on it. When you find a possible house you can post the address and ask about it. There are some streets near the freeway with bunches of bars so I dont think you'd want those streets. You can find out what is on a street by using a site like googlemaps,,yahoomaps or mapquest.com

You might also consider the fact that if you want to drive south to the tourist sites in the city of SanDiego tha tyou will have to dealwith commuter traffic.

Lots of Marines in the area, they are mostly well behaved. The beach will be a lot of fun for you and your kids, tanning, surfing, boogey and body surfing. Fishing off the pier does not reuire a license. Volleyball nets are set up about .25 mile north of the pier on the beach. Public use BBQs are set up on the beach. If you don't want to drive or the kids want to go by themselves to SD, The Coaster is pretty convenient $5 or so per ticket each way to SD from Oceanside.

Though the marines are there, this really isn't an issue unless you are going to bars. It's a great family city and beaches. Lots for kids this age to do between the harbor (kayaks, waverunners, deep sea fishing), the beaches (boogie boarding, surfing, sunning, volleyball, and a night time bonfire), and the pier (Ruby's, concerts, fishing, people watching). there are movie theaters nearby, t-shirt shops, all the stuff teens want.

You may have a hard time finding anything for July near the beach this late, but August 11 and after will be fine.

Go to www.northcoastvillage.org to reserve a condo direct from owners online - you can search by availability. or look at www.homeaway.com or www.vrbo.com for lots of listings in Oceanside. Much better beach access than cities south.

Oceanside and Northy County in general have way nicer beaches than San Diego. O'side has no seaweed and pretty white sand. We have a beautiful harbor with restaurants, stores, dep sea fishing etc. You can rent a boat power or sail, kayaks and wave runnres. For nightlife, go to Carlsbad right next door. There are a few fun bars there.

Don't know if your still even checking this site out anymore. We have found Oceanside a great getaway for the past 4 years. We visit often to escape the AZ heat. We rent beach houses, the backyard is the ocean. This is an awesome place for families to boogie board, surf,BBQ and just hang out. Many of the other beaches have boardwalks and homeless. We have never had any problems at all. We sleep with all the windows open and enjoy the sound of the ocean. It will cost more than a hotel but its well worth it. We find that we just all hang out swim and have fires at night right in the sand. Our family has at times rented 5 houses on the same street we all enjoy it. We rent houses through

We have never regretted staying at any of their properties they are very clean and have everything you just bring clothes and your camera. Every evening watch for dolphins to swim by around 7pm its awesome. We just got back form a weeks stay and I truly would love to live their. The only time you'll even know that there is a base near by is if you go down town area by the bars or to the base. We love Oceanside. Hope you have a great time
