Oakland is 2nd on travelers’ unfriendliest U.S. cities list

Per Conde Nast Traveler readers ... Most readers agreed that “Oakland has an image problem and a split personality. Some areas are charming while others are so unsafe travelers wouldn’t dare stop,” according to one reader. Other readers noted that Oakland has been “growing very hip in the last years” but some commented that it is “unfriendly,” “another big, dirty city,” and urge “don’t stay too long.”

Based on the above remarks, it's clear to me that these Conde Nast Traveler readers didn't spend much time in Oakland. The readers missed a lot!

Heck, Los Angeles is sixth on the list, while Anaheim is 9th, and Sacramento is 10th.

So is there a East Coast Bias????

I am not sure why any tourists stay in Oakland, so that it should be in a Conde Nast Traveler article.

Somebody enlighten me?

I love Oakland and my son lives there. Just got back from a stay near Lake Merritt and had a great time. But sorry, must agree that unless you're with an Oaklander, Oaklanders are not particularly friendly. But they are not rude, either - just not really friendly. Perhaps it is in comparison to my native South, where there is a more hospitable vibe.

These kinds of lists are always ridiculous.

Is there anyplace in the country more unfriendly than New York City?

I see that most of the "friendliest" cities are in the south, so maybe that has some shred of merit. Who knows!

I agree that most "lists" are silly ;-)

New Orleans ranks up there are friendliest. But it also has one of the highest murder rates and most corrupt police departments in the country.
