Downtown Safety and how long via Bart to San Francisco??

I am coming to San Francisco this august and due to the hotels being sooo expensive i booked the Marriott in downtown Oakland. How safe is the area? I honesty plan on going from the hotel straight to the Bart station across the street with no intentions of exploring the area. being that i'm going with my brother we could be coming back late at night. Also how long does it take to get to San Francisco city center via the Bart from where im staying?

as just a side note, there is also a ferry that goes between Jack London Square and San Francisco....

Jack London Square is 1/2 mile away - you could take a taxi, or you could take the free Broadway bus

Jack London Square on the waterfront - its fun and has a lot of restaurants and bars

Just thought I'd mention....as an alternative to BART in case you want to get out on the bay one day to San Francisco.

The Marriott is right across the street from the BART station and a 12 minute ride to SF financial district. I just happened to be walking there today and i must say Old Oakland is looking better with some nice restaurants across the street on Clay. El Gusano is pretty good. Chinatown is 2 blocks away and as long as you keep to the Old Oakland and Chinatown section, you should be fine. Same principle for those staying at Union Square not to walk towards the Tenderloin.

Hmmm.. Staying at the Marriott Oakland may not be too half bad... Given you can get back to your hotel from downtown SF faster than trying to squeeze into a crowded F streetcar going to FW. One drawback is the lack of bustling activity (both pedestrians and panhandlers) on weekends. Doesn't have a touristy vibe at all-
