first visit + safety

we are coming for 3 weeks to visit family who live in Oakland...they say their area is safe but not charming. I'm curious to know how "safe" I would be if taking a morning walk (which I do at home for health) and about my 14 year old daughter being able to get about on her own or with her 20 year old (female) cousin...would that be OK or should we keep a closer eye on her?

just to say - we are not planning on sitting around Oakland all day every day - we will be visiting many parks as well as other relatives in other parts of California - BUT Oakland is our base and where we'll be sleeping mos of our trip.

Hi, Sutter --- Isn't Upper Dimond specific enough to know where in Oakland?

Well, Oakland is my home, and has been for 30 years. While I think one should always be "street safe" in a city. if you are staying in Upper Dimond, you should be fine. There will likely be lots of walkers in the morning, so you shouldn't be alone. It's very residential. I would say don't send the 14 year old out at night by herself unless they are heading to the movies, etc.

There are some great neighborhood streets with wonderful restaurants and shops that are worth a visit. The Dimond shopping district itself is in the process of a bit of gentrifying, but perhaps you could visit some of the restaurants in nearby Park Blvd. as a bit nicer option.

Enjoy your stay, and let us know if you want any east bay suggestions of great things to do.

Thanks macjack! and I would LOVE suggestions of great East Bay things to do (though my son has been collecting ideas himself). We like nature and art, our daughter likes pop culture and shopping :>)

I highly recommend walking (or jogging) around Lake Merritt. Head to Tilden Park (or almost any other park in the hills) for hiking. If you have bicycles, the Bay Trail (from Emeryville to Richmond) is phenomenal. Bay Farm Island (the "other" "island" in Alameda) has a pleasant canal running through it, and you can walk, jog, or bike along it and the bay side (makes for a great loop).

For less outdoorsy pursuits, the Oakland Museum of California is worth a visit. Also, for shopping, most people head to Bay Street in Emeryville. Bay Street is characteristic of many modern outdoor shopping streets in America in that it does little to reflect the character of the community. Other than Bay Street, your best bets are Union Square in San Francisco and downtown Walnut Creek. Union Square is easy to reach on BART, and Walnut Creek can be reached by BART (via transfer to free downtown shuttle) or car.

For a collection of interesting one-of-a-kind shops and excellent restaurants, try College Ave., which spans both Oakland and Berkeley. Berkeley's 4th street is another fun hangout. If you want to enjoy a movie and experience some art deco architecture, too, then try the Grand Lake Theater. Also, the Saturday Farmer's Market (9-2) at the park right across from the Grand Lake is a wonderful community event. Not only great fresh produce, but lots of food vendors, crafts, and live music. It's more of a weekly festival than just a market. Highly recommended!

And I second the recommendation for the Oakland Museum. It's an overlooked treasure.

Thanks for the advice and looking forward to our visit! I'm going to check out the museum online,,,what a coincidence; I'd just read a recommendation for that farmer's market and now you've seconded it!
