Funny to see this discussion about the 680 vs going through "the City" (aka San Francisco).

We often take the 680 to get from Napa down to Monterey. It's less than HALF the time of the coastal Hwy 1 route (2.5 hrs vs 5.5 hrs).

And it's at least 1.5 hours less than going 19th Ave/101.

BUT...

For guests coming to SF for the first time, we often will suggest they take 19th, because this allows them to go over the Golden Gate Bridge. A perfect way to see something special on their way to Napa.

And, we'll often suggest they stop at Vista Point, just north of the GG Bridge. Incredible views of the City, and the ability to get out and actually walk the GG Bridge.. a very special treat for someone who is out here for their first trip.

For locals, a trip over the Golden Gate is no big deal-- we've all done it dozens of times. But for someone making a once-in-a-lifetime trip, it can be a very memorable drive, especially when combined with Vista Point or a short walk on the bridge itself.

We have quite a few guests who land at SFO or OAK, then stay in San Fran for a day or two, then head up to the Wine Country (via 101/Golden Gate), then take 680 down to Monterey/Big Sur. This routs is a pretty efficient way to get around, but there are lots of other options, too. It all depends on the needs/wants/desires of the traveler.

Vive la différence! ;-)
