Proper attire for dinner?

Hi. First of all, thanks everyone for all the wonderful responses to my previous posts about our trip to the Napa Valley. You've been incredibly helpful!

As this is our first trip to the Napa Valley, we'd like a bit of guidance re: proper attire for dinner. We're there for four nights over the Memorial Day weekend and we have dinner reservations at :

Bistro Don Giovanni, Angele, Farm at Carneros Inn and, finally, Auberge du Soleil

Is "business casual" appropriate or should my husband bring a jacket?

Thanks again for all your help............

The Napa Valley is an incredibly laid back place. Locals joke that if you see someone dressed up at dinner, it's either a high schooler taking their date to prom . . . or-- it's an out-of-towner! ;)

Seriously, there are only 3 restaurants in the Valley w/jackets required for the guys (and dresses recommended for the ladies):

1. French Laundry

2. La Toque

3. Etoile

The Napa Wine Train and Terra also request jackets/dresses for their evening dinners-- but this in not always enforced.

Most everywhere else, you *will* see men in jackets, and ladies in dresses-- but there will only be a few couples like this at any one place.

Our advice is: Where what feels comfy for you. If you feel underdressed if *anyone* in the room is more dressed than you, then by all means dress up! But it's not required (or expected) at most places. Slacks and a golf shirt are pretty much the norm at most spots, for both men and women.

Hope this helps! :)

We ate at Allegria, Bleax Magnolia, Bistro Don Giovanni and Bottega. All were casual attire, the men wore either dockers or jeans with a polo shirt and did not feel underdressed.

We dined at Cyrus a couple of weeks ago and there were no jackets, business casual is fine, relax and enjoy! :)

Oops-- forgot to mention:

Of the places you listed, you may see jackets at Auberge or even Farm-- but most folks will be "dressy casual".

We usually visit in the winter months, and my husband brings along a casual wool spotcoat. He wears it over an oxford or turtleneck with chino's and he's not over or under dressed anywhere we eat from the Bounty Hunter to Coles. (except the three dressy places mentioned above of course)

That's good to know! I had been worrying about this and how we were going to manage for dinner. On the day we're in Calistoga/St. Helena we're having dinner at CIA Greystone. We don't want to drive back down to Napa to change before we eat. Since we're visiting in July we'll be touring/tasting in shorts, but it's easy enough to have slacks in the car so we can change before dinner.
